'It can look spectacular' – interior designer Kit Kemp shows us 6 ways to ensure you don't overlook a nook

Interior designer Kit Kemp emphasizes the significant potential of nooks and alcoves in home design, highlighting that these often-overlooked small spaces can be transformed into beautiful, functional features with a touch of creativity. She notes that small areas offer opportunities to create extra space and can become desirable spots within a home if cleverly designed. Kemp, the renowned British interior designer and founder of Firmdale Hotels, shares six innovative ideas for styling nooks, drawing from her three decades of experience in creating distinctive interior spaces. One key suggestion involves utilizing nooks to enhance transitional spaces like hallways. Instead of mere passageways, hallways can be transformed into functional areas such as a music room by placing an upright piano in a nook. Adding bookshelves along a stairwell can also create a spectacular visual and functional element. Seating options, ranging from sleek benches to cozy loveseats, are ideal for nooks in both small and large hallways, providing a relaxing spot for residents and guests. Kemp also advises celebrating nooks in odd-shaped rooms, explaining that these natural architectural features can easily define distinct zones. For instance, an alcove in a larger room can become a study with the addition of a small writing desk, effectively maximizing space. In designs where a room has an unusual shape, one end can serve as a separate dining area while the rest functions as a living room, creating a cohesive yet segmented entertaining space. Maximizing storage is another crucial aspect of nook design. Kemp recommends using nooks to incorporate extensive storage solutions, such as entire walls of cupboards. To maintain aesthetic appeal, she suggests covering these cupboards with fabric fronts on jib doors, making them blend seamlessly into the wall and appear as decorative features rather than storage units. This approach is particularly useful in small guest rooms or box rooms, allowing them to serve multiple purposes without appearing cluttered. Enhancing nooks with color and character is encouraged, as smaller spaces are ideal for experimenting with bold design choices. Kemp, known for her vibrant use of color and pattern, suggests using patterned wallpaper on the back of a bookcase or in a recessed area. Styling these spaces with books and ornaments can create decorative corners. An example provided includes transforming a recessed space into a colorful study with vibrant wallpaper and complementary furniture, showcasing how color can break up space and add depth. Mirrors are presented as excellent tools for creating interest and enhancing nooks. Kemp advises using oversized mirrors, particularly those that can reflect light or color from other walls or artworks, to make a dramatic statement. Beyond their decorative qualities, mirrors are effective in increasing the perception of light and space, making small nooks feel larger and brighter. Finally, creative artwork can elevate a nook. Instead of conventional frames, Kemp suggests custom-boxing unusual items, such as shoes or keys, on a contrasting background to create meaningful and unique art pieces. This approach can turn a narrow niche into a focal point, especially when combined with elements like gallery walls and comfortable banquette seating, transforming architectural details into stylish design statements. #InteriorDesign #NookStyling #KitKemp #SmallSpaceSolutions #HomeDecor #StorageIdeas #ColorAndPattern #MirrorDecor #InteriorDesign #NookStyling #KitKemp #SmallSpaceSolutions #HomeDecor #StorageIdeas #ColorAndPattern #MirrorDecor
