Is coastal decor still on trend? Interior designers decide whether this style is a classic or cliché

Coastal decor is a design style that aims to create soothing atmospheres and incorporate natural materials, often evoking the serenity of coastal landscapes. However, opinions vary on its current trend status. Cassie Scaldaferri of Cass Design Co. asserts that coastal design will always be on-trend due to its timeless, versatile nature and its core focus on comfort and relaxation, qualities that enduringly appeal to homeowners. She highlights that the style's influences have consistently appeared in homes over the years, suggesting its inherent longevity. Michelle Woolley Sauter of One Coast Design echoes this sentiment, emphasizing the enduring appeal and universal charm of coastal decor. She notes that the style allows for diverse interpretations, making each coastal home interior unique. The key to successful coastal design, according to these experts, lies in capturing the authentic atmosphere of the style, thereby ensuring a timeless feel rather than a passing fad. Conversely, Kailee Blalock and Taylor Troia, founders of House of Hive Design Co., suggest that while coastal decor may not entirely go out of style, it is less mainstream within the current trend cycle. They observe that it might be less emphasized in the contemporary interior design industry, implying that while it's not 'out,' it's also not the dominant trend. Mollie Ranize, founder of Dmar Interiors, advises homeowners to adopt a less obvious and more broad-stroke approach to coastal decor. She cautions against excessive signage or overt 'beachy' items, recommending subtle elements like a soft blue paint color to evoke the coastal aesthetic without resorting to gimmicks. The consensus is that the style remains relevant, provided it is executed tastefully and with a refined approach. The experts emphasize that the longevity and current relevance of coastal decor depend on how it's integrated. Mixing coastal elements with other design styles, incorporating both old and new pieces, and focusing on a strategic color palette and materials are crucial. Scaldaferri suggests that rather than using overtly coastal-themed items, designers should focus on soothing neutrals, ocean-inspired hues like blues, greens, and subtle corals, combined with light-toned weathered woods and natural materials such as cotton, linen, jute, and rattan. This approach helps create a sophisticated coastal look that feels current and authentic. Furthermore, the rising trend of decorating with vintage and thrifted items can enhance coastal decor by adding character and authenticity. Blalock and Troia propose a 'de-modernization' approach, encouraging the use of vintage pieces that naturally exude a coastal vibe rather than purchasing new, generic 'beachy' decor. This method ensures a unique and personalized aesthetic. Michelle Woolley Sauter reiterates the importance of intentional material choices, advising to recover furniture in neutral fabrics, add toss pillows in coastal tones, and incorporate textural area rugs made of natural fibers to achieve an updated coastal look without overspending. She stresses that blending classic coastal elements with modern design principles creates spaces that are both timeless and contemporary. Janette Mallory, an interior designer with extensive experience, affirms that coastal decor is one of the most timeless styles, continually evolving to reflect contemporary preferences while maintaining its inherent appeal. Although it may not be experiencing a surge in popularity, there is always a place for this design style. By making thoughtful choices, individuals can create a fresh, relaxed, and timeless coastal scheme in their homes. #CoastalDecor #InteriorDesignTrends #TimelessDesign #NaturalMaterials #HomeDecor #DesignPhilosophy #StyleEvolution #DecoratingTips #CoastalDecor #InteriorDesignTrends #TimelessDesign #NaturalMaterials #HomeDecor #DesignPhilosophy #StyleEvolution #DecoratingTips
