How To Get A Moody Rustic Kitchen | The Summit Estate
The kitchen in The Summit Estate, featured by Studio McGee, has garnered significant attention for its moody green aesthetic, seamlessly blending rustic charm with sophisticated design elements. The core of this distinctive look is the cabinetry, painted in a deep, rich green inspired by Benjamin Moore’s Deep River. This color choice extends to a color-matched Lacanche range, creating a cohesive and dramatic visual impact within the space. Despite an off-center range, a balanced appearance is achieved through the clever integration of a mirrored door within the cabinetry, maintaining symmetry. To prevent the kitchen from feeling top-heavy, particularly with high ceilings, the cabinetry does not extend all the way up, allowing the natural stone walls to remain a prominent feature and contributing to an English-inspired design.
Natural materials are fundamental to the rustic ambiance of this kitchen. A plaster range hood, accented with a dark-stained decorative band, visually connects to the ceiling beams and trim throughout the home. This band detailing is carried over to thick open shelves, which feature a brass railing, echoing elements found in the basement bar. The extensive use of stone on all walls, a design choice originating from the home's fireplace and exterior, enhances texture and depth, reinforcing the authentic rustic character of the kitchen.
Functional and aesthetic details further elevate the design. An unlacquered brass faucet with a traditional shape provides a striking contrast against the home's modern architectural lines, a hallmark of the Studio McGee aesthetic. Soapstone countertops, complete with carved drainboards, were selected for their practical benefits and visual appeal. Ambient lighting is strategically introduced through sconces, customized with fabric shades to match the cabinetry, filling asymmetrical spaces and maintaining a monochromatic feel when artwork isn't suitable.
Adjacent to the kitchen, the dining area features a custom-length Orville Extension Dining Table from McGee & Co., tailored to the space. The seating arrangement thoughtfully combines chairs with two long benches, a design choice aimed at varying heights and preventing the space from feeling overcrowded with too many chairs. Lighting fixtures above the island and dining table are coordinated yet distinct, with three large pendants over the island and a linear fixture above the dining table, ensuring balance without obstructing views. A dark cabinet, styled with kitchen and dining accessories and vintage artwork, serves as both storage and a visual focal point. These design choices collectively contribute to a kitchen that is both elegant and deeply rooted in a rustic, moody aesthetic, providing a detailed blueprint for replicating this distinctive style in other homes.
