Here’s the Bathroom-Organizing Hack That My Wirecutter Colleagues Call ‘Genius’
The article presents a creative and effective bathroom organizing solution: using a magnetic knife rack to store small metal beauty accessories. The author, Rose Maura Lorre, describes how she adopted this hack in her small bathroom after noticing bobby pins sticking to refrigerator magnets during a move. Initially, her intention was to use magnets to keep bobby pins organized in a drawer. However, upon discovering more metal items that could be similarly organized, she sought a larger magnetic solution.
Lorre found the IKEA Hultarp Magnetic Knife Rack on Facebook Marketplace, which she then installed inside her medicine cabinet's mirrored, metal door. This allows her to store items like tweezers, cuticle trimmers, nail clippers, nail scissors, and bobby pins securely and within easy reach, eliminating the need to rummage through drawers or shelves. The magnetic rack frees up valuable space in her medicine cabinet and under-sink drawers for other essentials, a solution her Wirecutter colleagues praised as "genius."
The Hultarp rack, measuring 15 inches across, fits comfortably within most standard medicine cabinets (which typically range from 15 to 36 inches wide). It holds a significant number of items, including two pairs of tweezers, two nail clippers, two pairs of cuticle scissors, four pairs of hair scissors, a measuring spoon, and dozens of bobby pins. The rack adheres directly to the metal medicine cabinet door without requiring additional tools or installation, a convenient feature for renters or those hesitant to drill holes.
For non-metal surfaces, the article suggests using 3M Command Picture Hanging Strips, recommended by Wirecutter's home-improvement team, as they are removable and less likely to cause damage. While the Hultarp rack comes in matte black, which matches the author's cabinet interior, she notes that matte black surfaces tend to show dust and lint more readily.
A minor drawback of the Hultarp rack is its magnetic force. The magnets, made of neodymium, are strong individually, but the rack's design incorporates only a few slivers of magnets with significant empty space between them. This limits its overall load-bearing capacity. The author discovered this limitation when adding more items, causing the rack to slide off the cabinet door with a total weight of just 9 ounces. To compensate, she placed two kitchen magnets underneath the Hultarp rack for additional support, which effectively resolved the issue. The article concludes by highlighting the simplicity and effectiveness of this personalized organizing hack.
