Eight home interiors that make a feature of exposed services

This article presents a curated lookbook showcasing eight distinct home interiors that intentionally feature exposed services such as wires, cables, ducts, and plumbing as a prominent design element. The trend of stripping back interior finishes to reveal the functional infrastructure of a building contributes to an industrial and often unfinished aesthetic, which is highlighted through various projects spanning different geographical locations and design approaches. The featured homes demonstrate diverse interpretations of this design philosophy. For example, the Gale Apartment in Brazil, renovated by Memola Estudio, reveals the concrete structure, piping, wiring, and ductwork, counterbalancing this raw aesthetic with warm, earthy-toned furniture and contemporary art. In Paris, Ariel Claudet's Shakers Studio ingeniously integrates copper pipes not only to conceal electrical cables but also to serve as a hanging rail, drawing inspiration from traditional Shaker peg rails within a 17th-century building. Another Brazilian project, the RF Apartment by SuperLimão, situated in a 1958 modernist building in São Paulo, features exposed pipes painted in a pale blue-green hue to align with the building's original period. The design further incorporates a burnt pink ceiling and peeled-back entryways exposing plaster and brick, enhancing the building's historical character while embracing its utilitarian elements. Auba Studio's NZ10 Apartment in Spain, a conversion of a former bakery in Palma, capitalizes on the building's original structure by exposing high ceilings, bare walls, and ductwork. A stainless steel kitchen island complements the industrial feel established by the visible services. In Barcelona, Takk's 10K House, a 50-square-meter apartment, leaves water pipes and electrical fittings exposed to facilitate free passage between nested rooms and to minimize material costs, emphasizing functionality and efficiency. Wenink Holtkamp Architecten's De Lakfabriek apartments in the Netherlands, a conversion of a 20th-century factory, preserve the industrial essence of the original building. These open-plan apartments feature visible raw concrete, metal ductwork, and wiring, creating a cohesive industrial aesthetic. Similarly, Ab Rogers Design's Fishmarket in Japan, an artist's studio and residence, strips the interior back to its industrial shell. Fluorescent rotating partition walls are introduced, offering vibrant color contrasts against the grey concrete and exposed metal pipework. Lastly, Studio McW's Earthrise Studio in London, transformed from a warehouse, celebrates the building's original features by exposing existing services, which contribute to an industrial look. Redundant overhead services were removed to increase ceiling height, and custom oak joinery was added to introduce warmth, demonstrating a balance between raw industrialism and refined elements. These examples collectively illustrate how exposed services can be purposefully integrated into home interiors, creating unique, characterful spaces that blend industrial aesthetics with contemporary living. #HomeInteriors #ExposedServices #IndustrialDesign #ArchitecturalRenovation #InteriorDesignTrends #BrazilianArchitecture #SpanishArchitecture #DutchArchitecture #JapaneseArchitecture #HomeInteriors #ExposedServices #IndustrialDesign #ArchitecturalRenovation #InteriorDesignTrends #BrazilianArchitecture #SpanishArchitecture #DutchArchitecture #JapaneseArchitecture
