Doshi Levien unveils new modular sofa for Hay
Danish design brand Hay and London-based designers Nipa Doshi and Jonathan Levien have collaborated to create the 'Quilton' sofa, a modular system characterized by its quilted motif and sartorial inspiration. This partnership, which began in 2014, builds on previous successful projects like the 'Uchiwa chair' and the 'Dapper' chair, demonstrating a strong, focused collaboration between the two entities.
The 'Quilton' sofa emerged from Doshi Levien's strategic suggestion to Hay to introduce a softer, more elegant, and tailored seating collection. The designers' hands-on approach, involving extensive sketching and hand-prototyping in their London studio, was central to its development. This method fostered a relationship of trust with Hay, allowing the design to evolve from initial sketches without the need for elaborate renderings.
Modularity is a core aspect of the 'Quilton' sofa, offering 13 distinct modules and a standalone three-seater option. The design aims for a balanced aesthetic, combining elegance with generous, soft forms. The bold quilting on the seat is a defining feature, inspired by classic sofa designs, yet it is applied with restraint to maintain a clean and uncluttered appearance, particularly on the back of the piece.
Attention to detail is evident in various elements of the sofa, such as the subtle floating base that contributes to its lightness. A thin strip of material separates the sofa from its base, enhancing this effect. The modular configuration also allows for customization, enabling users to mix and match materials and colors for the front, back, and base of the sofa, with options in textiles and leather.
Given Doshi and Levien's extensive experience with surfaces and textiles, the choice of upholstery was crucial. The debut collection features Kvadrat fabrics, including 'Raas' with voluminous yarns, Margrethe Odgaard’s ‘Re-wool,’ ‘Atlas,’ and Fanny Aronsen’s ‘Vidar’ in a bold green. The designers also art-directed the launch photography at their Barbican apartment in London, aiming to convey a sense of eclecticism and cultural exchange by blending modern design with traditional objects and the architectural context of the Barbican.
The 'Quilton' sofa, introduced in 2021, also acknowledges the shifting role of furniture in a post-pandemic world. As homes have become central to work and daily life, the sofa is now viewed as a versatile platform. The design reflects this change by offering comfort and functionality for various activities, underscoring the increased importance of home environments that are both appealing and adaptable.
