DIY Husky tool bench transformed into a kitchen island
The article details a DIY project undertaken by Karen B. Gibbs, who transformed a 52-inch wide Husky tool cabinet into a functional and aesthetically pleasing kitchen island. Gibbs sought a solution for insufficient kitchen storage and counter space, finding the industrial-grade cabinet, typically used by mechanics, to be a suitable and cost-effective alternative to traditional kitchen islands. The cabinet, featuring nine drawers and a butcher block top, offered a substantial 16,361 cubic inches of storage for only $329.
The transformation primarily involved painting the black enamel of the tool cabinet white to better integrate it into a kitchen environment. This process required lightly sanding the metal surfaces, taping off the wheels and aluminum drawer edges, and applying eight coats of white enamel spray paint. Each coat was followed by light sanding with fine sandpaper, extending the project over three days to achieve a smooth and durable finish. Once dry, the interior of the drawers was cleaned and lined with an ultra-grip drawer liner to protect contents and provide a non-slip surface.
A key feature of the repurposed island is its four-foot-long top drawer, which Gibbs uses for organizing and displaying various spices and seasonings. This modification not only makes spices easily accessible but also freed up two shelves in her existing kitchen cabinets. The island also includes eight two-foot-wide drawers of varying depths: 1 ¾ inches and 2 ¾ inches for the middle drawers, and 8 inches for the bottom drawers. These drawers are utilized for storing cooking tools such as knives, spatulas, whisks, spoons, turners, tongs, and pans, ensuring each category has its designated space for effortless retrieval and organization.
The two deepest drawers at the bottom are specifically used for storing heavy items like cast iron skillets and large pots with lids, eliminating the common frustration of accessing items at the bottom of a stack. Beyond its extensive storage capabilities, the converted tool cabinet offers a practical 52-inch by 18-inch butcher block work surface, which proves particularly useful for meal preparation, especially during holidays. An additional benefit of this DIY kitchen island is its mobility, as it is equipped with wheels, allowing it to be easily moved for cleaning or rearranging the kitchen space.
