David Weeks Studio Reissues the Iconic Aluminum Bullet Chandelier
David Weeks Studio has reissued its Aluminum Bullet Chandelier, an iconic piece originally designed 25 years ago in 1998. This limited-edition, handcrafted light fixture, a hallmark of the studio's sculptural approach to lighting, has been brought back from the archives with subtle refinements. The initial design of the chandelier aimed to seamlessly integrate into large, traditional dining areas, drawing inspiration from the classic bullet-shaped shades prevalent in the 1950s.
The Aluminum Bullet Chandelier represents a fusion of historical design archetypes with contemporary aesthetics. David Weeks approached the redesign by reinterpreting the inherent formality of its mid-century predecessors, maintaining a profile reminiscent of a crystal chandelier with an oval top view. Weeks meticulously refined the piece through a hands-on process of formal reduction to achieve its streamlined silhouette. A key aspect of this refinement involved adjusting the length of the arms.
Weeks intentionally designed the arms longer than needed initially, allowing for gradual trimming to achieve precise proportions. This iterative process resulted in removing almost half of each arm, creating subtle arches approximately two inches from peak to depth, a more understated look than initially envisioned. The chandelier's structure comprises four hand-bent, intersecting rods made of powder-coated steel, each supporting eight hand-spun shades. This unique configuration allows each arm to rotate independently, enabling directional light casting. The design intends for the light to reflect off the ceiling, providing a soft fill light within the space.
Updates to this reissued version of the Aluminum Bullet Chandelier include minor alterations to its materials and an improved central shaft design for easier electrical wiring. The fixture is available in a variety of finishes to suit different interior palettes. These options include a white satin exterior paired with a white satin interior, a black satin exterior combined with a black gloss interior, and an aluminum exterior featuring an ivory satin interior, all set within an oil-rubbed bronze frame. Each finish is executed to a jewelry-grade standard. Additionally, the studio offers custom finishes upon request, providing further personalization options for designers and homeowners alike.
This reissue underscores David Weeks Studio's commitment to revisiting and enhancing its foundational designs, showcasing a timeless aesthetic that bridges classic influences with modern execution. The chandelier continues to embody the studio's distinctive style, characterized by sculptural forms and functional artistry in lighting design.
