Custom Railing Ideas

This article explores two innovative approaches to custom deck railings, offering alternatives to standard factory-built systems. Custom railings can provide advantages such as lower costs, enhanced craftsmanship, and a unique aesthetic that perfectly matches a homeowner's style and the deck's overall design. The article features insights from two builders: Michael Chandler from North Carolina and Clemens Jellema from Maryland. Chandler emphasizes the "alchemy" of transforming common materials into high-value, attractive features, highlighting a more personalized and artistic approach to deck construction. Clemens Jellema, a deck builder from Maryland, designed a railing system for a home near the Chesapeake Bay, incorporating nautical elements while ensuring an unobstructed view of the surrounding woods and river. His design features a top rail made of 1-inch copper pipe, wrapped with marine-grade roping, creating a distinctive shipshape appearance. For balusters, Jellema opted for tempered-glass panels from Deckorators to maintain clear sightlines. For other sections of the deck and stair rails, he used Deckorators' stainless aluminum balusters and connectors within a cedar framework, detailed with ipé plugs. Jellema notes that while his metropolitan area entails high labor costs, integrating some ready-made components, like manufactured balusters, can be a cost-effective choice. The material cost for the glass sections was approximately $50 per linear foot, while the aluminum sections cost about $42 per linear foot. The use of clear cedar, as opposed to select tight knot (STK) cedar, added an additional $6 to $8 per linear foot. Michael Chandler, a North Carolina builder, presented a railing solution for a 600-square-foot deck project when budget constraints arose. Instead of the initially planned custom metalwork, Chandler utilized agricultural wire "goat panels" for the guardrails. These panels, made of 7/32-inch-diameter wire in a 4-inch grid pattern, are rigid enough to function as balusters, offering an open view. The ends of these panels are inserted into holes drilled into the deck posts or into a 1-inch-diameter rigid-steel conduit that serves as the bottom rail. To provide illumination, rope lights are subtly tucked under the top rails. The material cost for these horizontal sections, including the rope lighting, was around $10 per linear foot. The "feedlot panels" themselves are readily available from agricultural suppliers in 16-foot by 4-foot sections, typically costing less than $50 each, making this a highly economical and distinctive option. The article also includes a cautionary note regarding building codes. While the featured railings met the code requirements in their respective jurisdictions at the time of construction, regulations vary widely. Readers are advised to consult local building codes to ensure compliance, especially concerning baluster spacing and the use of horizontal elements that might be deemed climbable by children. The comment section further highlights concerns about horizontal railings not being code-compliant in some areas, like Canada, due to safety risks for children who might climb them. #CustomDeckRailings #HomeDesign #DeckConstruction #NauticalDesign #WirePanelRailings #BuildingCodes #OutdoorLiving #MaterialInnovation #CustomDeckRailings #HomeDesign #DeckConstruction #NauticalDesign #WirePanelRailings #BuildingCodes #OutdoorLiving #MaterialInnovation
