Best ceiling colors – 8 paint shades that work perfectly overhead, according to interior designers

Ceiling color, often an overlooked aspect of interior design, can significantly impact a room's aesthetic and feel. While wall colors usually receive extensive consideration, treating the ceiling as a "fifth wall" offers a unique opportunity to enhance a space. Painting the ceiling in a bold or unconventional color is a cost-effective way to achieve a distinctive look and can draw the eye upwards, highlighting architectural details like ornate trim or tray ceilings. Interior designers emphasize that a well-chosen ceiling color can transform a room, making it an instant talking point. When selecting a ceiling color, various factors should be considered, such as the room's architecture, lighting conditions, intended use, and desired mood. For a subtle approach, a tonal scheme can be employed, using a paint shade one or two tones lighter or darker than the wall color. Alternatively, the ceiling can introduce a contrasting color to add drama and depth. Creative consultant Michael Dansk suggests evaluating what architectural elements could be highlighted, the natural light available, and the emotional response desired from the room—whether it should be calm and relaxing or vibrant and confident. Several specific color recommendations are offered by designers. Yellow, for instance, is highly optimistic and can replicate natural sunlight, particularly beneficial in east-facing rooms or those lacking ample light. Interior designer Karen Knox advises considering the room's function and desired atmosphere, noting that high ceilings can accommodate bolder colors without feeling oppressive. Red is presented as a warm, welcoming, and cocooning color, ideal for entrance halls to create an inviting and dramatic effect. Designer Laura Stephens often draws inspiration from existing wallpapers or creates tonal looks with shades slightly darker than the walls. She also suggests using gloss paint on low ceilings to reflect light and make them appear higher. Teal is recommended for creating a serene and relaxing atmosphere, serving as a stylish backdrop for furniture and artwork. Michael Dansk, who used a dusty green (teal) ceiling in his living room, emphasizes balance when incorporating multiple colors, suggesting keeping eye-level colors light and simple while using bold ceilings or colorful woodwork for drama. Black, while unconventional, can bring sophistication and an element of surprise, especially as part of a monochrome scheme. Cortney Bishop suggests extending accent colors used on interior doors or cabinetry to the ceiling for unconventional consistency. She also notes that a painted wooden ceiling can offer a softer finish than sheetrock. Pink, applied through color drenching—painting walls, ceilings, and woodwork in a single or closely related color—creates enveloping and cohesive interiors. Ruth Mottershead of Little Greene highlights how this approach makes color the focal point and delivers a strong design statement. Green, in its various hues, can add an extra dimension to a room's design. Emma Gurner used a light bronze green ceiling with soft pink walls to add coziness, advising that darker colors suit high ceilings for intimacy and that contrasting ceiling colors should be at least two tones apart from the wall color. Taupe is suggested for awkward spaces with uneven angles, as painting walls and ceilings in the same wraparound color can blur lines and create a harmonious, cocooning effect, as demonstrated by Andrew Griffiths of A New Day. These soft, biscuity tones offer a gentle entry point into colored ceilings without overwhelming the space. Finally, navy blue promotes relaxation and intimacy, making it an excellent choice for bedrooms or living areas where comfort is key. Sue Wadden of Sherwin-Williams points out that while white ceilings maximize light reflection in small rooms, colors like yellow or teal can introduce liveliness, while darker hues like red, green, or navy foster a cozier ambiance. Ultimately, the best ceiling color is one that aligns with the room's purpose and desired mood, transforming an often-forgotten surface into a significant design element. #CeilingColor #InteriorDesign #PaintShades #HomeDecor #ColorSchemes #DesignTips #RoomRenovation #PaintIdeas #CeilingColor #InteriorDesign #PaintShades #HomeDecor #ColorSchemes #DesignTips #RoomRenovation #PaintIdeas
