Arched kitchen cabinets are trending – this is why they're the perfect addition to a transitional kitchen

Arched kitchen cabinets are emerging as a significant design trend, offering a unique and timeless detail for new kitchen builds or renovations. This design choice sets a kitchen apart and promises an enduring style that avoids quickly becoming outdated. Interior designers are embracing this look, providing insights into its appeal and how to incorporate it effectively into various home aesthetics. Jocelyn Chiappone, owner and head designer of Digs Design Co., exemplifies the successful integration of arched kitchen cabinets in an 1864 historic renovation. Her design for a cook's kitchen, which replaced an outdated galley kitchen, draws inspiration from the home's historic vernacular and features an antique arched window found in the client's stairwell. This approach allowed for the introduction of elements that feel authentic to the period while incorporating modern functionality. The mirrored wooden cabinets, which flank the range, evoke the style of an old English kitchen. The overall design achieves a transitional style, blending contemporary light fixtures and a fresh color scheme with historical references. A key appeal of arched cabinets, according to Chiappone, lies in their ability to introduce an unexpected shape that contrasts with the predominantly square or rectangular elements typical in kitchens, such as cabinets, islands, and appliances. The glass arched doors create a focal point and add a reflective quality, while the curved lines soften hard edges and elevate the kitchen's aesthetic beyond mere functionality. These expansive cabinets also serve a practical purpose by providing ample space for displaying treasured items, such as porcelain collections, and offering safe storage. Furthermore, the design includes thoughtful lighting within the cabinets, which, when illuminated at night, adds a soft ambiance and visually expands the kitchen space. The use of walnut for the cabinet doors creates a rich contrast against the lighter tones of the cabinetry, painted in Benjamin Moore's Coventry Grey, with additional walnut shelving enhancing the luxurious feel. While the allure of arched cabinets is strong, Chiappone advises moderation, recommending only two to four arched elements per room to prevent the space from becoming overly busy or distracting. She emphasizes that the customization of arched cabinets can adapt to various interior design styles; glass and mullions offer a more traditional look, while curves on all-wood cabinet doors lend a contemporary feel. Richard Davonport, managing director of Davonport, concurs on the visual impact of arched elements, noting their ability to introduce fluidity and texture. He highlights that using curves in interior design creates a more relaxed and softer atmosphere by removing harsh lines, echoing natural forms. This connection to nature aligns with evolving buying habits that prioritize harmony with surroundings. Davonport suggests that if concerns about the trend's longevity arise, freestanding arched models can serve as focal points, offering sophistication without the commitment of fitted units. These freestanding options are versatile and can be integrated into various spaces beyond the traditional kitchen, such as dining rooms, coffee stations, or home bars. Interior designer Zoë Feldman demonstrates this versatility by incorporating an arched shelving unit into a home bar project, using natural wood doors to frame the space and create a striking statement. Feldman explains that the design aimed to mimic Spanish Mediterranean shutters, ensuring the nook was visually appealing whether open or closed. She points out that arches introduce softness and a touch of femininity to kitchens, which can otherwise feel rectilinear. Feldman advises that for bespoke kitchen designs, experts can help integrate arched cabinetry effectively. She, like Chiappone, recommends using arch details as accents rather than pervasive elements, as too many can be overwhelming, while judicious placement can highlight special areas. Ultimately, considered use of arched cabinets can be a secret ingredient for achieving an enduring and classic kitchen design. #ArchedCabinets #KitchenDesignTrends #InteriorDesign #TransitionalKitchen #HomeRenovation #Cabinetry #DesignElements #TimelessDesign #CustomKitchen #HomeDecor #ArchedCabinets #KitchenDesignTrends #InteriorDesign #TransitionalKitchen #HomeRenovation #Cabinetry #DesignElements #TimelessDesign #CustomKitchen #HomeDecor
