Anne Hathaway combines rich browns and earthy greens to bring sophistication to her living room corner – designers say it has 'transportive' qualities
Anne Hathaway's Californian home, designed by architect Myron Hunt and re-envisioned by Studio Shamshiri, showcases a unique aesthetic inspired by a traditional Swiss chalet. This design deviates from the typical bright and modern oceanfront structures often associated with Californian celebrity homes, instead embracing an abundance of wooden panels and warm textures. The living room, in particular, exemplifies this style.
During the renovation of the 1906 property, Studio Shamshiri aimed to preserve most of its original architecture, including the existing wooden panels. These natural wood tones form the foundational color scheme of the living room, contributing to a "cocooning" and intimate atmosphere. The designers describe this effect as transportive, suggesting it can evoke feelings of being in the Swiss Alps or other distant, heritage-rich locations.
To balance the richness of the brown wood, Hathaway's living room incorporates green furniture, notably a lush green sofa. This choice is highlighted by design experts as a significant trend in 2024, emphasizing warmth and sophistication. David Harris, design director at Andrew Martin, notes a resurgence of rich and earthy tones in sofa color palettes, with lush green being particularly effective when paired with wooden browns or rustic bricks.
Martin Waller, founder of Andrew Martin, further elaborates on the psychological impact of using emerald green in interiors. He suggests that such a color choice can transport inhabitants to diverse settings, from the cool tiled floors of Marrakesh to the traditional drawing rooms of 18th-century Georgian mansions. The color's ability to create an intimate and cozy space while maintaining an understated elegance is also emphasized.
Beyond the primary brown and green palette, the living room incorporates additional design elements. Shamshiri added intricately patterned curtains featuring a watercolor design of flowers and birds, complementing the wooden walls and green sofa. A mustard-patterned rug introduces a playful juxtaposition, adding a contemporary touch against the more traditional backdrop.
Matthew Williamson, a designer known for his bold and refined projects, supports this color combination. He recommends building a luxurious scheme on tonal shades of green, such as emeralds, moss greens, and jade. To further elevate this palette, he suggests introducing complementary hues like sumptuous golds and pops of mustard, along with gold metallics, to create a harmonious and lavish ambiance. This blend of colors and textures creates a sophisticated and cozy space, reflecting a thoughtful approach to interior design that offers both comfort and a sense of escapism. #AnneHathaway #LivingRoomDesign #SwissChaletStyle #ColorScheme #InteriorDesign #GreenSofa #CelebrityHome #DecoratingIdeas
