Interior designer April Jensen’s Glendale farmhouse melds everything she loves
Interior designer April Jensen resides in a 150-year-old Federal-style farmhouse in Glendale, Missouri, characterized by its Italianate details and a historical red barn, now converted into a pool house. The property features four terraces and a broad front porch with a haint-blue ceiling. Shortly after moving in with her family—husband Jason, children Lily, Julien, and Tallulah, and their dogs—a plumbing mishap occurred, causing significant water damage from a burst pipe. Instead of viewing this as a setback, Jensen and her husband saw it as an opportunity for renovation. They updated the home's lighting, installed a new thermostat and audiovisual system, and painted the entire house white to emphasize its architectural details and original woodwork. Jensen describes herself as calm under pressure, attributing her success in design and life to her confidence and an unwillingness to overthink decisions.
Jensen's approach to interior design is evident throughout her home, which she describes as an outward expression of her inner self. While the previous owners had opted for a traditional aesthetic with dark paints and heavy drapery, Jensen introduced a lighter touch, allowing her instincts to guide the design process. She advocates for creating homes that possess a sense of history while incorporating unexpected elements such as vibrant fabrics or unique light fixtures. Her philosophy emphasizes authenticity over perfection, encouraging clients to buy what they love and trust that it will find a place within their home. The designer believes in drawing broad strokes first and then fine-tuning rooms with accessories and color, ensuring a consistent tone without requiring exact color matches.
The living room's design began with a minimalist gray sofa, a deliberate choice by Jensen to create a welcoming space, unlike a similar sofa from her childhood that was off-limits. She prioritizes comfort and accessibility, ensuring that family and friends, including their three poodle mixes (Bon Bon, Bebe, and Winnie), feel at ease throughout the house. The original quarter-sawn, white-oak floors are a testament to the home's enduring character. The living room also features a marble-top Saarinen table, refinished side tables, and green-and-white cotton draperies from Highland Court. A pivotal element in the home's design was the discovery of two chairs from Anthropologie, adorned with a vintage-inspired fabric of yellow, jade green, and blue flowers, which Jensen describes as the "impetus for the design of the house" due to their cheerful colors.
In the dining room, Jensen incorporates vibrant colors through shades of green, warm wood tones, and a fuchsia painting by St. Louis artist Peter Manion. Her antique angel wings, acquired from the Round Top Antiques Fair in Texas, are displayed simply, juxtaposed with a Midcentury Modern unit showcasing her collection of milky-white and minty-green milk glass. Despite her preference for a streamlined look, Jensen acknowledges the current state of her home, which she feels is somewhat cluttered with new furniture pieces from her mother-in-law, a sconce awaiting repair, and fabric samples for ongoing projects. She views this temporary disarray as part of life.
Jensen’s passions, including music, pop art, thrift-store finds, and family, are interwoven into the fabric of her home. She and her husband share a love for music, owning eight record players and attending numerous concerts annually. Her home office is a blend of fine antiques, unique finds, and yellow silk drapes, chosen for a low-traffic area, reflecting her practical side. Despite the demands of her successful design business, which has seen significant growth and led her to hire a new marketing firm and a life/business coach, Jensen prioritizes family time. Her recent self-reflection on values and mission has brought her a greater sense of balance, reinforcing her belief that "it’s not about things, but about what happens to you when you’re living in an amazing space."
