Dissecting Lure Colors for Striped Bass

The effectiveness of lure colors for striped bass fishing is a debated topic among surfcasters. While some believe color selection is secondary to other factors, others meticulously choose realistic patterns. A common practice is to use 'light colors in light, dark colors in dark' scenarios, though this rule is not absolute, with anglers reporting success using black lures at midday and white bucktails on new moon nights. This article focuses on primary, natural, and unconventional lure colors for striped bass. White, black, chartreuse, and yellow are considered the four primary colors for surfcasting. For instance, black-over-orange plugs are successful in spring when sea robins are abundant, and gold lures can be effective where scup are prevalent. Brown or root-beer colored plugs can imitate tautog, while black-and-blue or black-and-purple plugs might mimic small sea bass. Olive or brown bucktails dragged along the bottom can simulate crabs, encouraging anglers to creatively match local forage. Unconventional colors have also shown surprising success. Bright pink soft-plastic lures, for example, have been observed to catch large bass, despite being largely overlooked. The theory behind pink's effectiveness in deeper water is that red light fades, making pink appear more natural to fish. Wine red, another effective color, may imitate squid or lobster but works even when these prey are absent. 'Wonderbread,' a lure color featuring red, blue, and yellow dots on a white base, migrated from largemouth bass fishing and has proven effective for striped bass. Anglers typically carry a selection of lure colors, often including one light and one dark option, along with 'match-the-hatch' colors. The choice of colors is influenced by fishing conditions; for example, more chartreuse is used in rough water, while whites and realistic patterns are preferred during the day or on bright nights. Darker colors are selected for new moon nights, although lighter colors are not entirely excluded. Anglers frequently switch lure colors to determine what is most effective, as a change can significantly improve hook-up ratios. An example highlights how switching from black bucktails to white lures on a dark night resulted in fewer hits but significantly larger fish.
