Roksanda creates a perfectly pink Christmas tree for Amsterdam’s Pulitzer hotel
Fashion designer Roksanda Ilinčić has unveiled a unique, pink tulle-covered Christmas tree at Amsterdam’s Pulitzer hotel, marking the arrival of the festive season. The collaboration brings together the worlds of high fashion and hospitality, rooted in a mutual appreciation for art and design. The Pulitzer hotel, known for its distinctive character, comprises 25 historic houses straddling two canals in Amsterdam, with its interior design characterized by a liberal use of color and playful nods to the city's history, a redesign overseen by Jacu Strauss in 2016. The hotel's courtyard serves as a central point, showcasing an amalgamation of architectural styles.
Ilinčić's design for the 10m high Christmas tree is deeply reflective of her eponymous London-based brand, Roksanda, which is celebrated for its sculptural, color-soaked aesthetics and frequent inspiration drawn from contemporary art and creative movements. The tree's entire adornment consists of drapes of varying shades of pink tulle, a textile-heavy approach that mirrors the richly crafted materials and color-blocking prominent in her collections. She specifically referenced a bright pink tulle used in a previous collection, aiming to incorporate her distinctive design language into a traditional Christmas symbol in a conceptual and unconventional manner. This artistic choice draws inspiration from Norwegian textile artist Hanne Friis, known for creating intricate ruched and woven textiles from diverse materials that evoke the corporeal and natural world.
Ilinčić explained that the project originated spontaneously, with the Pulitzer hotel reaching out to her. The decision to collaborate was based on her recognition of the hotel's special qualities, its team's meticulous attention to detail, and its history of celebrating various artists. This shared respect for art and design formed the foundation of their partnership, extending across Amsterdam, London, and Ilinčić's native Serbia, as well as the diverse international teams and collaborators of both brands. The Christmas tree is intended to bring 'seasonal cheer and joy' to their converging communities during Amsterdam's particularly festive December.
The unveiling of the tree was celebrated with a dinner hosted by Ilinčić, attended by notable figures such as photographer Paul Kooiker, Wallpaper* editor-in-chief Sarah Douglas, and artist Lissa Brandon. The dining experience was curated to complement Ilinčić's aesthetic, with evocative dishes inspired by the colors and textures of her work. The menu featured items like scallop crudo with gold leaf and caviar, burrata with beetroot and fig, sole with sweet and sour pumpkin and radish vinaigrette, and a pink macaron dessert in hibiscus, rose, and raspberry flavors. Ilinčić emphasized the importance of the entire festive experience, stating that the decoration of the table, including flowers and setting, is as crucial as the tree itself in creating a magical event, alongside conversation, food, and attire. She also shared personal anecdotes about her own Christmas tree traditions, which include experimenting with color and form with her daughter, and incorporating baubles collected throughout her life that hold emotional significance.
