Upend summer nail trends with these black and green shades
Summer nail trends are traditionally associated with predictable shades like red, pink, pastels, or classic French tips. However, a shift in the beauty industry is challenging these norms, with new nail polish brands emerging to offer darker hues previously reserved for winter. Brands such as Faculty and Crete are at the forefront of this movement, featuring a curated selection of dark green, grey, and black polishes.
This trend is closely linked to the growing market for men's nail polish. While there are no inherent differences in the formulation of polishes for different genders, a stigma has historically surrounded men painting their nails. The rise of a 'new wave of masculinity' in grooming has created a demand for brands that cater to and celebrate this demographic, fostering a more inclusive beauty landscape. These gender-neutral polishes, however, are not exclusive to men and offer a refreshing alternative for anyone looking to experiment with their nail aesthetics beyond conventional seasonal choices.
Established luxury brands have also embraced this inclusive approach. Gucci Beauty, for instance, offers a range of unisex products, including a concise selection of five nail polish colors that feature a classic black and a vibrant, almost 'slime-y' green. These shades have become favorites among enthusiasts, along with J Hannah's earthy chartreuse shade named Eames and YSL’s glitter-infused Holographic Black.
Further demonstrating this innovative spirit, J.Hannah plans to release a new shade called 'Compost' on August 4th. This color is inspired by what market researchers have controversially dubbed 'the ugliest color in the world.' This launch reinforces the idea of embracing 'jolie laide'—a French term meaning 'ugly beautiful'—and champions unconventional shades as the epitome of alternative seasonal colors for those who prefer to deviate from the mainstream.
For individuals interested in nail art, Eda Levenson, founder of the New York-based salon Lady Fancy Nails, has created a line of easy-to-apply nail stickers for ManiMe. These stickers feature swirling green and black patterns, allowing for a professional-looking manicure at home and providing an accessible way to incorporate these darker, more unique shades into summer nail designs.
