9 Popular Home Trends Interior Designers Say Won't Age Well

The article discusses nine current home design trends that interior designers predict will not have lasting appeal, advising homeowners to approach them with caution. Social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram often showcase trendy design choices, but many of these can lead to regret in a few years due to their short-lived nature or impracticality. While social media can be a source of inspiration, the emphasis is placed on creating a personal and timeless home rather than strictly following popular trends. One trend highlighted is bold cabinet colors. While popular due to a resurgence of 1970s vintage aesthetics, leading to kitchens with yellow, green, or pink cabinets, designers caution against this. Kitchen cabinets are a significant financial investment, and bold colors can quickly become outdated and expensive to change. Instead, it is suggested to incorporate bold colors through more easily changeable elements like backsplashes or lighting fixtures. Another trend, color drenching, involves painting an entire room, including walls, ceilings, molding, and often furniture, in a single hue. While it can create a cool vibe when executed perfectly, designers warn that it can quickly become impractical and garish, leading to a dated look. Overly themed spaces, such as those inspired by cultural moments like "Barbiecore" or maximalist jungle aesthetics, are also identified as trends that will not last. These themes, while fun initially, can quickly make a home feel dated. Designers advise incorporating elements of these trends in small doses, such as a pop of vibrant pink or tropical wallpaper in curated vignettes, rather than going all-in. Open shelving in kitchens is a surprisingly controversial topic. While aesthetically pleasing in curated displays, it can quickly devolve into a cluttered and disorganized mess if the homeowner is not meticulously neat, making it an impractical choice for many. Minimalist decor, characterized by stark, cold interiors with clean lines and neutral colors, is another trend losing favor. Designers note that people are growing tired of this aesthetic, preferring homes that feel warm, lived-in, and uniquely personal. The advice is to prioritize designing for one's life rather than for Instagram, blending classic pieces with subtle nods to current styles for a more timeless appeal. The "mob wife aesthetic," a bold and maximalist style featuring animal prints, faux furs, and vibrant reds, is viewed as another short-lived trend. Designers emphasize that authenticity should guide design choices, and trends that do not align with the homeowner's lifestyle, home, or location should be avoided. Faux molding, which involves installing trim or wall panels to mimic architectural details, is also discouraged. While it can create the illusion of historical detail, it often appears tacky or unnatural if the home is not genuinely from that era. A better approach, according to designers, is to embrace the original character of a space or invest in timeless artwork. Fast furniture, mass-produced pieces made from non-durable materials, is criticized for its lack of longevity. Investing in higher-quality furniture is recommended, as these pieces serve as anchors for the home, evolving gracefully over time and providing a more intentional design experience, ultimately being more cost-effective than frequent replacements. Lastly, limewash walls, an attempt to add texture, are problematic, especially for DIY enthusiasts, as achieving the desired effect is tricky and often leads to unsatisfactory results. #HomeDecor #InteriorDesign #DesignTrends #HomeRenovation #DecoratingIdeas #Minimalism #Maximalism #KitchenDesign #FurnitureChoice
