DIY Drybar's New Lazy-Girl Blowout
The article details the launch of Drybar's new blowout style, "The Dirty Martini," designed to create perfectly imperfect, slept-in waves, reminiscent of celebrity hair inspirations like Alexa Chung or Blake Lively. Alli Webb, Drybar's founder, expressed her enthusiasm for incorporating this tousled look into their menu, acknowledging that while there's a time for polished blowouts, there's also an appeal for a more relaxed style. The author of the article, Lauren Levinson, had the opportunity to test out this new look and gathered exclusive tips for re-creating it at home. The process is outlined in a step-by-step guide, indicating that it is relatively easy for individuals with some experience using hot tools.
The first step involves preparing freshly washed hair with a heat-protectant cream and then applying Drybar Mai Tai Spritzer Sea Salt Spray, priced at $25. This sea salt spray is designed to add beachy texture to the hair. It should be misted from the roots down and in between layers, not just on the top, and then raked through and scrunched with hands. The second step focuses on rough-drying the hair to remove some moisture while preserving its natural texture, with the sea salt spray also aiding fine hair in gaining texture. Stylist Alice Ketchesom advises working on the front sections first, especially for naturally curly hair, to manage cowlicks and widow's peaks. The goal is to create an unstructured wave in the midshaft, aiming for body and movement at the ends rather than spiral curls.
The third step involves creating loose, second-day curls using a 1.75-inch curling iron, such as Drybar's The 3-Day Bender ($125). Hair sections, approximately 1.5 inches thick, are wrapped away from the face, starting from the front and moving backward, with the iron held vertically. A crucial technique at this stage is to pull each curl straight down from the ends immediately after it's formed and still hot. This is followed by twisting the curl between the fingers and gently yanking it to stretch and loosen the coil, effectively making the curl drop sooner for a more relaxed finish.
Finally, for the fourth step, additional texture is added once the hair is loosely curled using Drybar's new Triple Sec 3-in-1 Spray ($25). This multi-functional mist provides volumizing, texturizing, and dry-shampoo properties, noted for its pleasant, sweet perfume. Ketchesom recommends applying it in small bursts throughout various layers, roots, and midsections, rather than a single large mist like traditional hairspray. After application, the hair should be scrunched and massaged, then shaken and raked with fingers. If more refinement is needed around the face, extra curls can be added with the curling iron. To maintain the blowout overnight, Ketchesom suggests sleeping with hair styled in two "Princess Leia buns" to prevent it from looking literally slept-on. In the morning, the buns are released, the hair is shaken, and more Triple Sec can be applied for a refreshed look, a method verified as effective by the editor.
