This Custom Bathroom Vanity Cleverly Contains Countertop Clutter
The article details the renovation of a 60-square-foot, windowless bathroom by designer Evgenia Merson, focusing on innovative storage solutions and luxurious material upgrades. The primary challenge was to reduce countertop clutter, which Merson addressed by integrating two tall storage towers on either side of the vanity mirror. These white oak structures extend to the ceiling, providing maximum storage space for everyday items and featuring interior outlets to discreetly store electric toothbrushes.
Beyond storage, Merson implemented a significant plumbing change by wall-mounting the sink faucet, allowing the new marble countertop to be the focal point. The custom cabinets feature beaded doors that visually extend the vertical lines, creating an illusion of a taller ceiling in the compact space. While the custom cabinetry and plumbing fixtures represented a splurge, they were integral to achieving the desired aesthetic and functionality.
The renovation also transformed the shower area. The original, pre-made plastic shower was demolished and replaced with sandy-toned zellige tiles. To maintain a cohesive and elevated look, offcut pieces from the marble vanity countertop were ingeniously used as trim for the shower and around the shelving niche. This not only added a touch of luxury but also provided a practical solution for finishing the edges of the thick zellige tiles, which typically present a challenge due to their unfinished nature. This resourceful use of materials also contributed to cost efficiency.
The marble theme was extended to the floor with herringbone-pattern Carrara marble tiles, specifically 1-by-4-inch slabs from Stone Center. Merson carefully selected these tiles to ensure they were long enough to avoid a mosaic-like appearance and possessed visible veining, unequivocally signaling their authenticity. The meticulous attention to detail in every aspect of the 60-square-foot bathroom ensured a comprehensive and stylish transformation, effectively addressing both aesthetic and functional goals.
