The Best Dog-Friendly Patios Around D.C.

The District of Columbia has seen a significant shift in its policy regarding pets on restaurant and bar patios. Prior to 2017, establishments faced strict regulations, but a unanimous decision by the D.C. City Council in 2017 allowed venues to set their own dog-friendly policies. This change has led to a growing number of restaurants, bars, and hotel establishments openly welcoming dogs on their outdoor patios, with many even offering specialized amenities like “yappy hours” and dedicated pet menus. The article identifies a selection of such establishments across D.C. and its surrounding areas, highlighting their unique offerings for both pets and their owners. Among the featured dog-friendly venues is Joy by Seven Reasons, located in Chevy Chase, which provides a weekend brunch “yappy hour” menu for dogs. This menu includes items such as salmon with rice and vegetables, scrambled eggs, shredded chicken, and tropical “pupsicles.” Another notable spot is The Midlands Beer Garden in Park View, a large outdoor beer hall that offers picnic tables for dogs and treats like peanut butter ice cream for canine companions, while owners can enjoy a selection of 26 beers on tap. The Wonderland Ballroom in Columbia Heights, a long-standing establishment, is frequently filled with dogs on its benches alongside their owners enjoying pub classics. Taco Bamba, a popular taco chain with a D.C. location, features a “Houndgarten” patio where dogs receive complimentary red bandanas and water bowls. Wet Dog Tavern, an eight-year-old neighborhood bar, is themed around the owner’s golden retriever and claims to be D.C.’s first pet-friendly beer garden, offering a variety of beverages for humans. Dog Daze Social Club provides a year-round garden for dogs to play, with an entry fee for non-members, and offers pup cups, treats, and human food like tavern-style pizza and craft beers. Chaplin’s Restaurant in Shaw provides water bowls for dogs on its patio, allowing owners to enjoy ramen and cocktails, and its sister sushi spot, Zeppelin, also has a dog-friendly patio. Dovetail Bar & Restaurant in Logan Circle features a special “Dogtail” menu for pets, including beef sirloin tips and “Woofle Ball” burgers, and hosts dog-themed happy hour events. Fairmont Washington D.C. Georgetown’s Courtyard Bar offers a VIP (Very Important Puppy) menu with treats like peanut butter and frozen berries, cake “pups,” and kibble-rimmed Pawgaritas. Wunder Garten in NoMa is a large beer garden with games and lounge seating that welcomes pets. Prost, a Bavarian beer spot in Mount Vernon Triangle, has a dog-friendly streatery and offers treats for visiting dogs, alongside a happy hour for owners. Art and Soul at Yotel’s lobby-level restaurant near the U.S. Capitol offers a pooch patio menu with items like the Hungry Dog (grilled sirloin) and peanut-and-banana pupsicles, in addition to happy hour specials for owners. Mala Tang, a Sichuan restaurant in Arlington, provides water bowls and complimentary milk bones on its 30-seat outdoor veranda. Paraíso, located in Capitol Hill, has a flower-covered patio where patrons can enjoy frozen margaritas and sangria during happy hour, and a bottomless brunch on weekends, all while their dogs are welcome. Caboose Commons, with locations in Vienna and Fairfax, welcomes dogs on its patios with water bowls and treats, and its Vienna location is conveniently located off the Washington & Old Dominion trail, making it an ideal stop after a dog walk. Finally, Dacha Beer Garden in Navy Yard is a large outdoor space suitable for ending a riverside dog walk, with its original Shaw location also being dog-friendly. Lost Dog Cafe Alexandria, part of a restaurant family known for its animal rescue foundation, also offers a pet-friendly outdoor patio with salads and sandwiches. #DogFriendlyPatios #DCRestaurants #PetFriendlyDining #WashingtonDC #OutdoorDining #YappyHours #RestaurantGuide #DiningOut #LocalEats #DogFriendlyPatios #DCRestaurants #PetFriendlyDining #WashingtonDC #OutdoorDining #YappyHours #RestaurantGuide #DiningOut #LocalEats
