Zoe Ball's colourful kitchen island shows how easy it is to create a characterful cooking space - here's how she did it
The article showcases Zoe Ball's colorful kitchen makeover, highlighting how strategic use of color can transform a space without a full renovation. It emphasizes the impact of a vibrant kitchen color scheme, moving away from neutral palettes to create a more inviting and personalized home environment. The design was executed in collaboration with Arior Design, which focused on enhancing the existing Howden's kitchen layout.
The core of the transformation lies in choosing multiple shades. The kitchen features green cabinetry combined with an orange island, demonstrating how contrasting colors can elevate the style. Catherine Smith, director of Arior Design, explained that the goal was to infuse Zoe Ball's colorful personality into a previously white and grey space. The project also involved extending the color scheme beyond the kitchen into the adjacent living room, using Little Greene Paint company's 'Masquerade' pink on walls, skirting boards, built-in cupboards, shelves, doors, and frames. A soft white, 'Slaked Lime Mid' by Little Greene, was applied to the ceiling and window frames to complement existing white shutters.
Maintaining the original layout was crucial to the design. The existing open-plan kitchen worked well for Zoe Ball's needs, so the emphasis was on updating the aesthetics rather than altering the functional structure. The color scheme and style were carefully extended into the living area to ensure a natural flow between the spaces. This included matching wall colors and incorporating feature colors, such as a green armchair, which mirrored accessories on the kitchen island and artwork on the kitchen wall. Catherine highlighted a framed Jules Et Jim poster as a key inspiration for coordinating the new paint colors in the kitchen.
Attention to detail in finishing touches further unified the design. A traditional pendant light from Devol Kitchens was reinstalled over the island, a piece Zoe had cherished in her previous kitchen. The existing handles were replaced with antique brass hardware from Corston Architectural, chosen for their reasonable price and 'living finish' that evolves over time. Safety considerations were also integrated, particularly concerning the placement of curtains near the oven. A bespoke curtain pole and rings were installed to allow the curtain to be pulled away safely during cooking, ensuring both aesthetics and practicality. This project serves as a compelling example of how thoughtful color selection and refined details can inject personality and warmth into a living space, even without extensive structural changes.
