Orzo Kitchen and Wine Bar delights with classic Mediterranean flavors

Orzo Kitchen and Wine Bar, named after Italian short-cut pasta, is a popular local establishment situated at the end of Main Street Market in Downtown Charlottesville. It offers a modern dining experience infused with traditional Mediterranean flavors from Italy, Spain, Greece, and the south of France. Located approximately a 20-minute walk or a five-minute drive from central Grounds, the restaurant operates daily from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Despite a slightly slower service, the food quality is highly regarded, making it a worthwhile destination for fine dining. The restaurant recently participated in Charlottesville Restaurant Week (CRW), offering a fixed $35 menu that included an appetizer, entrée, and dessert, excluding gratuity, tax, and drinks. This CRW menu provided an affordable opportunity to experience Orzo's fine dining, with typical main dishes costing up to $38. Reservations are recommended, particularly for indoor seating, though outdoor patio and bar seating are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Upon entering, guests are greeted by heavy velvet curtains, creating a unique ambiance. The interior features an open kitchen, ambient lighting, and panoramic landscape paintings depicting Mediterranean scenes. The dining room was reportedly crowded even on a Wednesday, attracting a diverse clientele of Charlottesville residents and University students. For appetizers, the reviewer sampled the Lebanese Muhammara and Hummus & Fresh Vegetable Crudité. The Muhammara, a vibrant roasted red pepper and toasted walnut dip served with za’atar grilled flatbread, was praised for its spicy yet sweet flavor profile, enhanced by the crunch of walnuts and the aromatic za’atar. The crudité, comprising carrots, celery, and cucumbers, was complemented by creamy hummus with a dash of olive oil. The Muhammara was noted as a standout dish among the appetizers. The main course selection included the Peasant Beef and Pork Bolognese and French Onion Risotto. The Bolognese featured a tender, flavorful meat sauce made from beef and pork, enriched with cream and pomodoro, coating rigatoni pasta. Chili flakes and thinly sliced garlic provided a subtle spiciness, contributing to a rich umami flavor that did not overpower the dish. Garnished with Parmigiano-Reggiano, the pasta offered a salty contrast, while the rigatoni effectively captured the sauce and meat. The French Onion Risotto was described as a creamy, decadent dish reminiscent of French onion soup, incorporating melted Gruyere cheese, porcini mushrooms, red wine, sweet caramelized onions, crispy garlic breadcrumbs, and fresh green onions. Both entrées were served with well-balanced portion sizes. The meal concluded with dessert options: Semisweet Chocolate Pot de Crème and tiramisu. The Pot de Crème was a luxurious chocolate mousse topped with whipped cream and dark chocolate shards. The tiramisu, an Italian classic, featured mascarpone cream layered between espresso-soaked ladyfingers. Both desserts served as a satisfying end to the three-course meal. Overall, the experience at Orzo Kitchen and Wine Bar during Charlottesville Restaurant Week was highly positive, with the thoughtful curation of the menu and the upscale ambiance noted as key highlights. The restaurant is recommended for special occasions such as Valentine's Day or graduation dinners, owing to its delightful reimagining of traditional Mediterranean cuisine and sophisticated atmosphere. #OrzoKitchenWineBar #MediterraneanCuisine #CharlottesvilleRestaurantWeek #FineDining #FoodReview #Charlottesville #RestaurantExperience #ItalianSpanishGreekFrench #OrzoKitchenWineBar #MediterraneanCuisine #CharlottesvilleRestaurantWeek #FineDining #FoodReview #Charlottesville #RestaurantExperience #ItalianSpanishGreekFrench
