An Old English-Inspired Laundry Room Reno That’s Still Extremely Practical
Indianapolis-based interior designer Anissa Zajac transformed her laundry room to enhance practicality and efficiency, especially for a household with three active daughters. The renovation focused on smart storage solutions and functional design elements. A key feature introduced by Zajac is the use of three canvas Crate & Barrel rolling laundry bins. These bins are specifically measured to fit snugly under custom-built drawers, allowing for efficient separation of whites, darks, and colors. This system, according to Zajac, has streamlined the laundry process significantly, with children bringing their hampers downstairs nightly to sort clothes, making it easy to identify when a load is ready.
The strategic placement of the laundry room, adjacent to the kitchen, ensures that laundry tasks remain top of mind. Zajac emphasizes that while many prefer second-floor laundry rooms, a ground-floor location near high-traffic areas like the kitchen proves more efficient. Beyond the rolling bins, Zajac implemented several other updates to improve functionality. The cabinets were designed with meticulous attention to storage needs, including measuring items like paper towel rolls to ensure they would fit. To combat the common issue of stale, muggy odors in laundry rooms, Zajac incorporated cutouts into the cabinet door fronts to promote better airflow.
For countertops, Zajac opted for warmth and practicality. She replaced the original linoleum floors with herringbone brick tile from Floor and Decor, applying thick grout lines to achieve a timeless, rustic English cottage aesthetic. Her husband, who runs a remodeling business, constructed pine board countertops on either side of the room. Zajac prefers wood over marble or stone for folding due to its warmer feel. This counter space also serves as a versatile workstation for her hobbies, such as flower arranging, with a stool kept nearby.
The walls of the laundry room are clad in 4-inch-wide vertical shiplap, a nod to Zajac's upbringing in upstate New York. This choice not only adds to the aesthetic but also provides a surface that is easier to clean than painted drywall. Extending the shiplap to the ceiling creates the illusion of a taller room. A small sink was integrated into the design, primarily for Zajac's flower arranging rather than laundry, surrounded by durable black granite. A niche beneath the sink offers additional storage or a cozy sleeping spot for the family dog.
Storage extends to dedicated spaces for various household items. Upper cabinets house cleaning supplies and Zajac's vase collection, while drawers above the rolling hampers are organized for daily necessities. This includes a "very organized junk drawer" for small items like batteries and pens, a drawer for outdoor toys, and Zajac's personal tool drawer. The overall design philosophy centers on ensuring every item has a designated place, which contributes to a more organized and efficient household operation.
