Laundry room design mistakes and how to avoid them according to experts
Designing a functional and aesthetically pleasing laundry room involves careful consideration to avoid common pitfalls. Experts emphasize that a laundry room is primarily a workspace, and its design should prioritize efficiency and support various tasks beyond just washing and drying, such as sorting, hanging, ironing, folding, stain removal, and hand-washing. While machines often dominate the focus, the surrounding work areas and storage solutions are crucial for an optimal experience. Even in small spaces or with a clean slate, thoughtful details can significantly enhance the laundry experience.
One significant mistake to avoid is poor lighting. Dim lighting can hinder the ability to spot clothing stains, read washing machine symbols, and sort laundry effectively. Interior designer Helen White recommends specific lighting strategies. For instance, if high ceilings are absent or cupboards restrict ceiling lights, undercabinet LED strips can provide supplementary task lighting. For overhead illumination, a row of pendants that shine directly downwards and can be positioned above head height is preferable to spotlights, which create shadows. If ceiling lights are not feasible or limited, wall lights can be installed over countertops to provide additional light for tasks. For low ceilings, flush lights with multiple bulbs are suggested to maximize illumination without visual clutter.
Insufficient storage is another common issue. Maximizing laundry room storage involves utilizing wall space for items like drying racks and ironing boards, or incorporating a dedicated nook or closet. Adequate counter space or at least a shelf is essential for stain treatment, finishing, and folding. Shelves are crucial for organizing products, and a cabinet can also serve this purpose. Planning for hanging and drying space tailored to one's lifestyle, such as wall-mounted hanging racks or hanging arms for shirts, pants, and dresses, is also recommended.
Failure to utilize space properly, particularly in often-small laundry rooms, can lead to inefficiency. A comprehensive checklist for optimal design includes selecting a washing machine size that fits the space without overwhelming it, considering whether to fit machines side-by-side or stacked. The space above side-by-side machines should be made useful with reachable shelves or hanging space. A deep sink is highly desirable, as is a designated nook for a wastepaper basket and a planned location for a hamper. Incorporating a workspace for crafts or a desk nook, and even a 'junk drawer,' can add versatility to the room.
The lack of multi-functionality is a missed opportunity. Laundry rooms can serve as household utility zones, accommodating recycling sorters, packing/shipping supplies, household tools, and cleaning equipment. Integrating a mudroom concept, especially if the laundry room is near an exterior door, is practical. This can include a fitted storage bench for shoes and stacked washer/dryer units to save space. For pet owners, a dog shower can be a valuable addition for washing muddy paws or soiled items before laundering. Finally, neglecting style can make the laundry room an uninviting space. Incorporating fun elements like vibrant wallpaper, colorful seagrass baskets for organization, and ensuring a balance of style and substance can make the room more enjoyable and encourage its use. Choosing hard-wearing and easy-to-clean materials, along with a large deep sink and a tap with a hand spray, enhances both functionality and durability. Ultimately, a well-designed laundry room adds significant value to a home, making it a highly desirable feature for potential buyers.
