Santa Monica Proper Hotel by Kelly Wearstler
Proper Hotels has unveiled its latest establishment, the Santa Monica Proper Hotel, scheduled to open on June 17. This new location marks a significant aesthetic evolution from its San Francisco counterpart, while still embodying Kelly Wearstler’s distinctive design philosophy, characterized by bold spaces, unique forms, and intricate pattern integration. Situated in Santa Monica’s downtown, the hotel revitalizes a 1928 Spanish colonial revival building, originally designed by Arthur E. Harvey, through the addition of sleek, contemporary construction, resulting in 271 luxurious rooms.
The interior design emphasizes abundant natural light, organic color palettes, and soft textures, evoking a serene, beach-side atmosphere. Guest rooms are designed to be both calming and lively, featuring playful geometric elements. For example, one suite includes an oversized, upholstered arch serving as a headboard, alongside whimsical seating options like striped, checkered, and fuzzy chairs, complemented by subtle floral wallpaper. The hotel’s bathrooms are notable for their extensive use of stone, including peach-toned flooring and walls, and a dual-sink vanity with a blend of brushed silver and gold accents. The flooring transitions from roseate tones to brick-toned tiles and obsidian-framed windows, creating a cohesive and sophisticated aesthetic.
Beyond accommodation, the Santa Monica Proper Hotel offers a comprehensive range of amenities. It features three distinct restaurants and bars, including Onda, a pioneering collaboration between chefs Jessica Koslow of Sqirl and Gabriela Camara of Contramar. For wellness, the hotel provides a 24-hour, 2,500-square-foot fitness center, complete with a yoga terrace. A rooftop pool offers expansive views of both the ocean and the city. Additionally, the hotel hosts Surya, a spa led by Ayurvedic guru Martha Soffer, which offers personalized programs focused on physical, mental, and spiritual well-being through therapeutic massages, steam and oil treatments, cooking classes, yoga, and meditation. Guests can also borrow surfboards for beach access, highlighting the hotel's integration with its coastal surroundings.
