This Zen Dubai Apartment Is a Masterclass in Minimal Interiors
This blog post showcases a Zen-inspired apartment in Dubai, meticulously designed by Vera Dieckmann, founder and CEO of XO Atelier, for creative and brand consultant Augustine Wong. Situated in the heart of the city's downtown district, the apartment serves as a tranquil sanctuary, featuring a blend of earthy textures, clean lines, and bespoke elements that subtly honor Wong's Asian heritage.
The collaboration between Wong and Dieckmann began during the COVID-19 pandemic through social media, where they discovered a shared aesthetic. Wong's primary vision for his apartment was to achieve streamlined, minimal interiors using natural shades of cream and off-white. A key requirement was the incorporation of his Asian heritage without resorting to clichés, alongside the crucial need for ample, built-in storage to maintain an uncluttered environment.
Dieckmann executed the design with a restrained, tone-on-tone neutral color palette, enhancing comfort and warmth through a carefully curated selection of furniture and finishes. She utilized materials with diverse textures and structures, ranging from matte to satin, crackle effects, and high-gloss surfaces. Light-bleached oak and textured fabrics were also integrated to add depth and visual interest to the space.
Subtle design details contribute to the serene ambiance. For instance, the window bench is topped with a highly polished steel surface that creates a water-ripple effect, casting dancing reflections and shadows as natural light shifts throughout the day. Japanese-inspired slatted wooden screens, known as paravents, are used to filter light into the master bedroom and separate it from the urban cityscape. Similarly, rippled glass partitions divide the bedroom from the master bathroom, fostering a connection between the two areas and allowing natural light to flow into the bathroom, echoing Asian design principles.
The guest bedroom features a pull-down bed that can be neatly stowed away into a bespoke wall panel, which also conceals storage. This innovative solution allows Wong the flexibility to use the room as an extra living space or for activities like yoga when guests are not present. Light itself is treated as a decorative element, meticulously directed and filtered. The apartment incorporates sculptural light fittings and a system of concealed lighting that creates atmosphere in the evenings and illuminates integrated bespoke artworks by artist Latifa AlSaeed, a close friend of Wong’s.
Many furniture pieces were custom-made in the UAE according to XO Atelier’s designs, while some of Wong’s existing collection were seamlessly integrated. The bathroom is adorned with travertine tiles from the Spanish brand Inalco, complemented by matte black fittings for a modern contrast. The terrace provides a vital connection to the city while maintaining the home's tranquil atmosphere.
The overall design successfully blends Wong’s personality and heritage with a contemporary approach to minimalism, creating a monochrome oasis of calm where every detail is intentional and contributes to a serene, highly functional living space.
