A Kyiv Therapist Gets a Scandinavian Zen Studio by Olga Fradina
Olga Fradina undertook the renovation of a 78-square-meter (approximately 840-square-foot) interior in Kyiv, Ukraine, transforming it into the Kamala Center, a Scandinavian zen studio for a therapist. The project was executed on a budget, emphasizing functionality for both the client and her patients, who engage in various practices including color therapy, Aura-Soma, counseling, massage, yoga, and meditation. The renovation included a comprehensive re-layout of the space, incorporating a new kitchen, a reception and tea room, a dedicated massage room, a shower room, and a consult room.
The design aesthetic integrates minimalism with subtle industrial elements, with a primary focus on color, given the therapist's specialization in color therapy. The objective was to create an environment that promotes calmness and relaxation for patients during their treatments, achieved through the deliberate use of rich, soothing colors throughout the studio. A significant design feature is a custom-designed wall rack in the Aura-Soma room, crafted by Fradina to elegantly display the colorful bottles of oil used in the therapy, making it a central decorative and functional piece within the space.
To further personalize the interior and adhere to the budget, Fradina collaborated with local Ukrainian furniture designers. Custom pieces, such as a coffee table in the Aura-Soma room and a bench in the massage room, were created by Staritska Maysternya. This collaboration extended to the tea area, where Staritska Maysternya also designed rustic wooden elements, complemented by a graphic print by Fradina herself, adding an artistic and cohesive touch to the communal spaces.
The massage room features a cozy niche, adorned with one of Fradina’s cloud prints and illuminated by a neon sign that spells out “Be Free.” This detail enhances the tranquil atmosphere of the room, promoting a sense of liberation and peace for patients. The integration of custom furniture and thoughtful artistic touches ensures that the studio not only meets the practical requirements of a therapeutic center but also embodies a serene and healing environment.
The overall design successfully balances aesthetic appeal with practical considerations, creating a harmonious and functional space that supports the various therapeutic modalities offered at the Kamala Center. The project demonstrates how thoughtful design, even within budgetary constraints, can profoundly impact the atmosphere and user experience of a professional space, aligning with the therapeutic goals of the practice.
