OBRIY uses natural materials + warm tones for 'PORTAL' apartment in kiev

OBRIY.architects has completed the 'PORTAL' apartment in the center of Kiev, Ukraine, an ample residence designed to maximize natural light and offer stunning city views. The design approach emphasizes a harmonious blend of natural materials and a warm-toned color palette, creating an organic and earthy atmosphere throughout the 1130 sq ft (105 m2) space. A key design element is the intentional emphasis on the apartment's windows. To highlight these openings, OBRIY created a gallery feature with timber-covered shelves and walls, strategically positioned between the windows. This gallery serves as a visual connector, linking the kitchen and dining areas with the lounge zone. Further enhancing the clean lines of this gallery, heating elements beneath the windows are concealed within custom-built wooden boxes, which also integrate additional storage drawers. The material selection extends to the flooring and walls, where a warm grey concrete floor complements decorative plaster applied to effect walls. The remaining walls are painted in an off-white hue, contributing to the overall organic and earthy color scheme that pervades the apartment. The kitchen, a creation by Steininger, presents a monolithic aesthetic with precise lines. A distinctive feature of this kitchen is a stainless steel element incorporating a herb garden. The designers opted for a white finish for the kitchen island, introducing a pure accent that seamlessly integrates with the apartment's broader color palette. The dining area is furnished with a large table crafted from bleached American ash, accompanied by minimalist chairs that echo the table's clean lines. Lighting fixtures in this area are sourced from Australian designer Amee Allsop. In the lounge zone, a modular sofa by Paola Lenti offers versatility, with independent units allowing for various layout configurations. The television stand is uniquely fashioned from substantial wooden beams with natural edges, while the wall behind the television is treated with natural plaster to create a textured, organic backdrop. The bedroom also incorporates the same design principle of boxing heating elements and integrating drawers for a cohesive look. The master bathroom, adjacent to the bedroom, features walls adorned with tiles from Sant’Agostino Ceramics' ‘set’ collection. The flooring utilizes the same microcement found in the kitchen and living room. Washbasins by Ceramica Galassia, with their cylindrical shape and thin edges, offer a blend of geometrical precision and elegance. All ceramic fixtures in the bathroom are rendered in black, serving to emphasize their forms against the neutral backdrop. Amidst the challenging early months of the invasion of Ukraine, an apartment in Kyiv underwent a transformative renovation, showcasing both creativity and resilience. The '2BM Apartment' project, led by architects Volodymyr Petrunok, Roman Savchuk, and Olexandra Alioshkina of TOP LAB Interiors, aimed to create a vibrant and functional living space despite budget constraints. Perched on the 26th floor overlooking Kyiv's Dnipro River, this 1,141-square-foot, one-bedroom apartment, known as the "Apartment with a Lizard," represents a bold and surrealist design vision by Ukrainian studio Metric Bureau. Designed for a creative couple and their cat, the apartment blends dramatic aesthetics with functional living spaces, fulfilling the clients' desire for both a cosmic carnival flair and areas for quiet reflection. Designer Svitlana Moskalenko noted the clients' openness to risk-taking, which allowed for a unique and emotionally resonant interior. The apartment's design journey begins in a monochrome red entryway, encompassing walls, ceiling, and lighting, creating an immediate immersive experience. Ater Architects uses blue curtains as walls in Kyiv apartment
Ater Architects, a Ukrainian architecture and interiors studio, renovated a 65-square-metre apartment in Kyiv, named EGR Apartment, for a young couple. The original layout was cramped and compartmentalized, featuring separate rooms connected by corridors. The clients requested a light and minimalist space, leading Ater Architects to remove most of the internal partition walls to create an open-plan design. In this transformed space, cobalt-blue curtains are employed in place of traditional walls to define distinct zones within the apartment. The only area fully separated by walls is the bedroom. The blue curtains serve as a contrasting element against an otherwise monochromatic color and material palette, with the aim of introducing a vigorous colored accent while maintaining brightness and airiness. For structural considerations, the ceiling in the kitchen and bathroom areas was lowered to accommodate ventilation systems. In the rest of the apartment, the existing concrete slab ceiling was painted white, contributing to the minimalist aesthetic. For the flooring, wide plank oak engineered flooring was used throughout most of the apartment. The kitchen and bathroom, however, feature a unique breccia flooring, which is composed of fragments of broken marble bound with polymer grout. In the kitchen, black ceramic tiles with pink grout, which complements the cylindrical base of a custom-designed dining table, were installed. Oak veneer cabinets and a copper Flowerpot lamp, designed by Verner Panton in 1968, were incorporated to add warmth to the space. The living room features a powder-pink sofa, providing another soft contrast to the striking blue curtains. A white 265 wall lamp by Paolo Rizzatto for Flos illuminates the area. The clients explicitly requested no television or projector in the living room, intending it as a space for communication. Instead, the room's focal point is a graphic artwork by Yulia Popova. A specific request from the apartment owner was the inclusion of a dedicated workspace for composing electronic music. Ater Architects designed a custom table to accommodate the necessary equipment. Above this table, a photograph of the cult Berlin techno-club Berghain by Michael Belhadi is displayed. Mussakulova, cofounder of Sdelaemremont.kz Interior Bureau, eventually convinced them, explaining that mirrors could seamlessly integrate objects into the interior. To avoid the restaurant aesthetic, she designed the column with long, rectangular reflective panels, making it appear sculptural rather than an eyesore. The apartment's original layout presented an even greater challenge due to the limited natural light sources. Mussakulova and her team spent weeks contemplating the optimal arrangement to ensure light penetrated all necessary rooms. The solution was to combine the office and cooking zone, creating an enfilade layout where rooms are arranged in a row with aligned doorways. This design allows light to flow through the apartment, maintaining an airy feel, and also provides a degree of separation between the workspace and the living area, preventing disturbances. The designer's attention to detail extended to the doors, where she emphasized maximizing the apartment's ceiling height. She incorporated elaborate crown detailing above doorways, such as the one leading to the kitchen, to visually enhance the room's vertical dimension. For the kitchen, Nazym, despite not being an avid cook, expressed a desire for a beautiful, separate space that would mask noises and odors and inspire her to cook. Spanish Volakas marble on the bathroom floors and shelving niches harmoniously blended these cool and warm tones. The main bedroom offered a slight departure from the overall color scheme, featuring striped wallpaper from Ferm Living. Mussakulova, who admits orange is her favorite color, toned down the patterned walls with white bedding and mustard-tinged curtains discreetly tucked behind classical molding. The bathrooms incorporate curved vanity mirrors and wall tiles by Kerama Marazzi, with vanity hardware from Anthropologie and sinks from Vilbo.
