Expert tips for creating Christmas floral arrangements
Christmas in Australia is characterized by sunny days and outdoor gatherings, a contrast to the traditional snow-covered imagery often associated with the holiday. This context makes flowers a suitable and sustainable choice for festive home decoration. Florist Myra Perez, Creative Director of My Violet in Rosebery, NSW, offers expert advice on selecting and arranging Christmas flowers to create a celebratory atmosphere.
Perez emphasizes a minimalist approach to floral arrangements, suggesting that the beauty of a single type of bloom is often best appreciated when displayed en masse in a simple vase, rather than through mixed arrangements. Her preferred Christmas flowers for the Australian season include Christmas Bush, Flowering Gum, gardenias, red Christmas alstroemeria, gloriosa, and magnolia. She recommends presenting gardenias in a low bowl or vase, potentially augmented with a sprig of holly or spruce. Red Christmas alstroemeria is noted for its visual impact when grouped, while gloriosa is best suited for long, narrow, and low vases. Magnolia stems can be arranged individually along a table to create a linear design.
For creating a Christmas table centerpiece, Perez advises simplicity. She suggests using a cherished vase and filling it with one or, at most, two types of the recommended flowers. An example provided is a low crystal bowl filled with gardenias, complemented by a cascading element of Christmas Bush or Flowering Gum on the side. For larger gatherings, the strategy involves incorporating multiple vases, ideally in odd numbers, and maintaining a consistent floral theme. To enhance the table setting, a small sprig of the chosen flower variety can be placed at each guest's setting, such as a snippet of Christmas Bush across a napkin, to unify the decorative elements and add a refined touch.
