karim+elias give desert sand new form with luminous wall lamps and sculptural vases
The design duo Karim+Elias has introduced two new creations to their ongoing Desert Drop series, unveiling wall-mounted lamps and sculptural stem vases at Downtown Design Riyadh. These new pieces continue the designers' exploration of rammed earth, transforming this ancient construction technique into contemporary design objects. The wall lamps, crafted from sedimentary earth and hand-blown glass, feature a soft inner glow, while the vases incorporate a glass chamber for floral arrangements, maintaining a grounded aesthetic. Both designs echo the organic forms and striated textures previously seen in their Desert Drop coffee table, which debuted at Dubai's Downtown Design. Through these works, Karim+Elias treats sand not just as a material but as a carrier of regional history and identity, respectfully evolving ancient craft traditions into functional and collectible items that reflect the natural beauty of the desert landscape.
The Dubai-based designers are known for their material-led approach, producing layered, striated objects from compressed sand, clay, and natural pigments. Their work consistently integrates the traditional principles of rammed earth into modern contexts, previously manifesting in large-scale installations, thin-wall sand skins, modular screens, and hybrid sculptures that blur the lines between art and architecture. The Desert Drop series marks a continuation of this artistic and functional trajectory on a smaller, more intimate scale, bringing the tactile qualities of the desert into domestic environments through these collectible objects. The Desert Drop Wall Lamps are meticulously handcrafted from earthen materials, featuring naturally pigmented layers. They uniquely combine sand, a primary component of glass, with hand-blown glass elements. A hand-blown glass shade is subtly recessed into the rammed earth body of each lamp, designed to house a soft bulb with dimming capabilities, thereby providing ambient lighting. The surfaces of these lamps are designed to evoke sedimentary layers, and the inclusion of glass, derived directly from sand, elegantly closes the material loop, connecting the raw natural element to the refined finished product. This layering of tones and textures creates a geological rhythm, transforming each lamp into a luminous, artistic representation of the desert landscape.
Similarly, the Desert Drop Stem Vases are crafted using the same layered rammed earth technique, with their forms inspired by the undulating shapes of sand dunes. These vases are designed to be substantial and grounded, serving as holders for small floral arrangements. Each vase features a slender, removable glass chamber, carefully nested within its earthen structure, allowing for fresh water and flowers to be displayed. This practical element ensures the longevity of the flora while maintaining the aesthetic integrity of the earthen design. The collection as a whole emphasizes a deep connection to nature, a reverence for traditional craftsmanship, and a commitment to sustainable and innovative design practices. The careful balance between raw, natural materials and refined artistic execution positions these pieces as both decorative and functional, seamlessly blending into contemporary interiors while carrying the narrative weight of their origins.
