Shea McGee's top tips on styling a kitchen for the holidays

The holiday season typically brings a focus on decorating the more frequented areas of a home, such as living rooms and entryways, with Christmas trees, garlands, and wreaths. However, the kitchen, despite being a highly functional space where many spend considerable time during the festive period, often remains undecorated. Interior designer Shea McGee offers five practical tips to incorporate holiday cheer into the kitchen, ensuring that the decorations are both festive and functional. These tips aim to transform the kitchen into a welcoming space without hindering its primary use. One key tip is to decorate the kitchen island using a statement vase. Given its central position, the island serves as an immediate focal point for festive enhancements. McGee suggests using a large vase for greenery that looks appealing even without branches, such as a dark, rustic vase filled with seasonal branches for a festive touch. Alternatively, woven vases offer a natural aesthetic, or a subtly colored vase can complement the display without overpowering it. The emphasis is on choosing pieces that are striking yet do not occupy excessive counter space, preserving the island's functionality. Another recommendation involves playing with height to create visual interest. A lone vase on a large island can appear sparse; therefore, pairing it with other decorative elements adds depth. McGee advises styling the vase with a low bowl or a tray. This arrangement allows for the inclusion of items like a simple fruit bowl or a tray adorned with candles and decorative objects. By varying the heights of different elements, the arrangement becomes more dynamic and aesthetically pleasing, contributing to a layered and inviting holiday display. Incorporating a seasonal plant is a simple yet effective way to introduce natural elements into the kitchen's holiday decor. McGee suggests using a small potted plant or an herb. Miniature Christmas trees or herbs like rosemary, commonly associated with holiday cooking, are ideal choices. These plants can be further embellished with small bows or tiny ornaments, such as mini embossed mercury glass ornaments, to enhance their festive appeal. For those seeking long-lasting options, faux plants that can be repurposed year-round or pre-lit faux trees offer convenience and sustained charm. Antique silverware is highlighted as another element that adds a decidedly festive touch to the kitchen. This is attributed to its association with hosting and dining during the holidays, as well as its aesthetic compatibility with traditional Christmas decor. McGee advocates for mixing old and new elements, suggesting the use of antique silver accessories like pitchers on shelves, trays on countertops, or crocks filled with cutlery. These items are often readily available and affordable, and checking for silver hallmarks ensures authenticity, adding a touch of timeless elegance. Finally, the range area, often a prominent feature of the kitchen, is identified as a prime location for festive decorations. McGee suggests adorning the range hood with a wreath and placing a festive dishtowel on the stove. A lush, simple wreath, perhaps accented with a burgundy velvet ribbon, can create a festive yet refined look. It is important to ensure that any decorations above the cooker are securely fastened to prevent accidents. By implementing one or two of these ideas, kitchens can be transformed into functional and festive spaces, integrating holiday decorations seamlessly without compromising practicality. These tips collectively offer a balanced approach to holiday kitchen styling, emphasizing both aesthetics and utility. #KitchenDecor #HolidayDecor #ChristmasKitchen #SheaMcGee #InteriorDesignTips #FestiveStyling #HomeDecor #KitchenIslandDecor #SeasonalPlants #KitchenDecor #HolidayDecor #ChristmasKitchen #SheaMcGee #InteriorDesignTips #FestiveStyling #HomeDecor #KitchenIslandDecor #SeasonalPlants
