This Gurugram home brings alive a tropical vibe with the elegance of minimalism
This blog post explores a 1,400 square-foot Gurugram apartment designed by Shreya Budhiraja of EyeInspire, which embodies a minimalist tropical aesthetic. The home, located in a modern high-rise amidst 25 acres of greenery, was designed for a couple seeking a calm and exclusive space to build future memories. The design brief focused on creating a serene environment that reflects the homeowners' evolving aesthetic.
The apartment features European sensibilities, translated through Indian materials and custom-crafted furniture pieces. High ceilings ranging from 12 to 15 feet contribute to an open and airy feel. The overall palette is dominated by ivory tones, with subtle accents of blue, green, white, and brown. Teak elements and contoured silhouettes are recurrent design features, reflecting Budhiraja's design philosophy.
Every aspect of the apartment is intended to promote relaxation, with a deliberate absence of sharp edges or stark color contrasts. Furniture predominantly features curved forms, inspired by arches and domes. The tropical theme is further enhanced by sepia-toned artworks depicting surfboards and cocktails, alongside ceramic artifacts and natural rocks curated by the homeowners. Sheer linen curtains filter sunlight, adding a soft glow to the deep blue velvet sofa and various hand-knotted rugs. Notably, the electric blue velvet sofa in the living area was a refurbished classical wooden piece belonging to the homeowners, reimagined to align with the home's new aesthetic.
Layering of textures is a key element of the design, incorporating materials like terrazzo and showcasing raw spaces contrasted with delicate drapes. The fluted black finish seen on the TV console is replicated on the coffee table and, in white, on the dining table, creating a cohesive design language. A 'green jungle corner' in both the dining area and bedroom introduces a vibrant and enlivening dimension to the space.
In the main bedroom, the plush blue velvet from the living area reappears on the headboard, while the guest bedroom features a low-height bed upholstered in rich cotton-linen. Earth-toned carpets complement the wooden veneer flooring in the bedrooms. Jute planter pots and a floor-standing curvilinear metal mirror, echoing the relaxing arch pattern, further enhance the tranquil atmosphere. The guest bedroom also includes playful pink bedding with a geometrical pattern, an abstract hand-knotted rug, and a distressed half-moon mirror that amplifies natural light, alongside rustic ceramic planters. The main bedroom details include a carved wooden lamp, cotton-linen bedding, and a gold foil frame encasing a photo of the Eiffel Tower, personalizing the space with cherished memories. A charming nook by the window in the main bedroom features an arch-shaped floor-standing mirror, a distressed mirror lantern, and various planters, creating a serene green retreat.
