Furniture makers nail it with old-time fasteners
In contemporary interior design, two traditional fasteners, nailheads and rivets, are experiencing a resurgence in popularity, blending historical craftsmanship with modern aesthetics. Both were historically used to secure materials in upholstered furniture and in manufacturing, respectively. Today, these elements are being incorporated into home decor to evoke either traditional elegance or a more urban and edgy look.
Nailhead trim, a design element common in 17th-century France and 19th-century England for embellishing chairs, now serves as a clever and decorative method for furniture craftsmen. Lisa Ferguson, a Toronto-based interior designer, highlights the use of antique-brass nailhead designs on furniture, noting how brass and warm satin detailing contribute to classic glamour. She states that this type of trim almost always conveys a perception of luxury while adding texture to a piece. However, Ferguson cautions against opting for inexpensive trims if the goal is a luxurious appearance. She advises consumers to pay close attention to the craftsmanship, the scale, and the spacing of the nailheads relative to the furniture piece. For a truly refined look, she recommends choosing individual metal nailheads over plastic strips, budget permitting.
Several prominent design companies are integrating nailheads into their product lines. Ballard Designs offers a range of tufted and untufted headboards that allow for customization with various fabrics and finishes, including brass or silver nailheads. HomeGoods provides slipper chairs in vibrant colors like peony pink, lime green, and rich purple, all accented with silvery trim. They also feature a sleek bench adorned with a green, white, and black classic pattern, further highlighted by this trim. Designer Jonathan Adler, another advocate for the nailhead motif, incorporates polished nickel nailheads into his Channing screen, a white lacquered room divider. He also playfully uses construction nails as a design element in a clear acrylic obelisk, describing nailheads as hitting "just the right note for today" by combining "twinkly glamour and edgy attitude."
Arhaus showcases a collection of chairs that blend recycled leather seats with woven fabric backs, where these materials are joined by a nailhead border. Their Portsmouth chair and settee feature exposed framing, woven grain-sack-textured upholstery, and nail trim. The Alpine Estates ottoman offers a modern interpretation of western style through the combination of cowhide, nailhead, and wood trim. The Colburn steamer trunk, made from chestnut leather, is embellished with antique brass nailheads. Beyond nailheads, rivets are also making an appearance. Jayson Home, for instance, offers Ludlam pendant lighting fixtures that incorporate caged iron slats and hammered rivets, demonstrating the versatility of these historical fasteners in contemporary design.
