Money for Nothing: meet the team of presenters and designers
The BBC daytime show 'Money for Nothing' focuses on transforming discarded items into desirable pieces. The program involves presenters who retrieve items from council refuse collection sites and a team of designers who upcycle them. Once transformed, these items are sold, and the profits are returned to the original owners.
Sarah Moore, Jacqui Joseph, and JJ Chalmers serve as the presenters. Sarah Moore is a designer and writer known for winning 'The Great Interior Design Challenge' and has authored books such as 'Homemade Gifts Vintage Style' and 'Vintage Home'. She has a particular interest in vintage fabrics, wallpapers, and haberdashery. Jacqui Joseph is a television presenter and producer with experience on shows like 'Lorraine' and 'This Morning'. She also owns 'Jacqui Joseph Designs', a company specializing in homeware. JJ Chalmers is an Invictus Games medallist and former Royal Marine who was injured in Afghanistan. He also participated in 'Strictly Come Dancing' in 2020.
The team of designers plays a crucial role in transforming the discarded items. Zoe Murphy is a printed pattern designer who revamps mid-century furniture with vibrant, 1950s-inspired prints, emphasizing ethical and ecological reuse. Jay Blades, a modern furniture restorer and eco-designer, is recognized from 'The Repair Shop' and is committed to sustainability and social enterprise, working with disadvantaged young people. Bex Simon is an artist, blacksmith, and metalworker who combines traditional craft with contemporary design, focusing on the interplay between natural forms and industrial materials.
Forest and Found, comprised of artists Max Bainbridge and Abigail Booth, source raw materials from natural landscapes to explore identity and place through hand-work and material histories. The Rag and Bone Man, consisting of Paul Firbank and Lizzie Gossling, creates bespoke high-end objects using salvaged materials like vehicle parts and fire extinguishers, employing traditional metalwork techniques. Anthony Devine, with 19 years of experience in furniture making and upholstery, runs the UK’s leading upholstery school, Ministry of Upholstery, and is known for handcrafting frames and experimenting with upholstery.
Rob Shaer is a highly skilled woodworker and metalworker who collaborates with various individuals on diverse projects, from church bells to climbing frames. Mark 'Horse' Phillips, with a decade of experience as Chief Engineer at a high-end recording equipment manufacturer, specializes in repurposing old audio equipment to create unique vintage sounds. Rupert Blanchard, a designer, maker, and collector, crafts bespoke pieces by repairing and re-working salvaged materials, ranging from natural wood to galvanized steel signage, driven by a passion for authenticity.
These presenters and designers collaboratively give new life to discarded items, promoting sustainability and craftsmanship by transforming forgotten objects into valuable, unique pieces while also highlighting the importance of creative reuse and environmental responsibility.
