These Fabrics Were Inspired by Baz Luhrmann’s New ‘Elvis’ Movie

The film 'Elvis,' directed by Baz Luhrmann, has sparked renewed interest in Elvis Presley's iconic style, influencing not only fashion but also home decor. In response to this cultural resurgence, Academy Award-winning costume designer Catherine Martin, who worked on the film, has collaborated with Mokum to launch a new textile collection called the Royal Menagerie. This collection offers fabrics and wallpapers that encapsulate the opulent and maximalist aesthetic of the 1970s, drawing direct inspiration from Presley's world, including his Graceland residence. One of the prominent designs in the collection is the Royal Peacock wallpaper, which features regal blue birds surrounded by tropical plants. This design pays homage to the recurring peacock motif found throughout Presley's Graceland, particularly the stained-glass peacocks that separated the living room from the music room. Catherine Martin, also Luhrmann’s creative and life partner, notes that the Graceland archivist suggested the peacock symbolized eternal life in some religions, aligning with Presley's spiritual nature. The collection also draws from Graceland’s famous Jungle Room, a space renowned for its unique decor, including a carpeted ceiling and an indoor waterfall. The aptly named Jungle Room pattern incorporates layers of tropical flowers and leaves, reflecting the room's lush environment. Another design, Monkey Business, is a wallcovering inspired by Presley’s ceramic chimp statues, depicting apes climbing a leafy tree. Big cat prints are another significant theme within the Royal Menagerie collection. These include a velvet jacquard tiger print, a direct reference to Presley’s famous tiger jumpsuit, and a colorful jacquard leopard print. The illustrative Panthera velvet also pays tribute to one of Presley's early nicknames, further embedding his personal history into the collection. For those seeking more understated options, the collection offers Grande Boucle and Monarque. The Monarque velvet, in particular, is inspired by the interiors of Presley’s tour bus, showcasing a different facet of his personal style. The inspiration behind Graceland’s distinctive aesthetic, particularly its wood-paneled and tiki-themed elements, is attributed to Presley’s father, who initially disliked the tiki furniture. According to Martin, Elvis purchased the furniture as a joke, which later became a defining feature of his home. This anecdote underscores the collection’s focus on storytelling, with each design element carrying a narrative from Presley's life. The Royal Menagerie collection aims to infuse living spaces with a sense of humor, fun, and exuberance, embodying the playful and extravagant spirit of the 1970s and Elvis Presley’s unique style without being overly serious. The collection offers a way for enthusiasts to incorporate a piece of cinematic and musical history into their homes, bridging the gap between film, fashion, and interior design. #ElvisPresley #TextileCollection #CatherineMartin #MokumTextiles #GracelandInspired #1970sDecor #MaximalistDesign #WallpaperDesign #HomeDecorTrends #ElvisPresley #TextileCollection #CatherineMartin #MokumTextiles #GracelandInspired #1970sDecor #MaximalistDesign #WallpaperDesign #HomeDecorTrends
