raf simons upholsters 100 cassina feltri armchairs in vintage quilts for calvin klein's miami/basel debut
Calvin Klein made its inaugural appearance at Design Miami/Basel with an installation showcasing a collection of 100 limited-edition Cassina Feltri armchairs. These chairs were re-upholstered in vintage, one-of-a-kind American heirloom quilts, personally selected by Calvin Klein’s Chief Creative Officer, Raf Simons. This initiative marks a continuation of Simons' creative exploration, blending international design with an American cultural perspective.
The Feltri armchair, designed by the acclaimed Italian designer Gaetano Pesce for Cassina in 1987, is celebrated as a significant piece of contemporary design. The chair is characterized by its unique construction, utilizing thick wool felt through a patented technique. Its design features a soft, enveloping backrest contrasted with a firm, durable lower section reinforced with thermosetting resin, offering an ironic take on the traditional royal throne.
Each of the 100 armchairs is individually numbered, with its interior upholstery incorporating historic quilts dating back to the 19th and 20th centuries, thereby integrating Calvin Klein’s brand aesthetics with historical American craftsmanship. The first 50 armchairs were made available for purchase directly at the Design Miami/Basel fair, while the subsequent 50 (numbered 51-100) are slated for release through Cassina at a later date, catering to a broader audience.
The installation itself is housed within a reconstructed American barn, built from reclaimed 19th-century wood. This barn was previously featured in the Calvin Klein 205W39NYC Fall 2018 runway show, highlighting a thematic consistency across Simons' creative projects. The interior walls of the barn are adorned with billboard-sized images of artwork by Andy Warhol, reflecting Calvin Klein’s ongoing collaborative partnership with The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. This integration of art, fashion, and design underscores a multifaceted approach to cultural engagement, presenting a rich tapestry of American heritage and contemporary design expression.
This presentation at Design Miami/Basel emphasizes a dialogue between historical American textile art and iconic European furniture design, mediated through the lens of a contemporary fashion house. The project not only celebrates the aesthetic and functional qualities of the Feltri armchair but also recontextualizes vintage American quilts within a high-design setting, offering a unique blend of heritage and modernity. The limited availability and unique customization of each armchair contribute to their exclusivity and collectible appeal.
