Bedroom Trend: Black Walls
A striking design approach to master bedrooms involves the use of black walls to cultivate a serene and restful atmosphere. This concept, inspired by a room design admired by a Denver couple, was brought to fruition by Miranda Cullen, principal and co-founder of Duet Design Group. Cullen opted for Sherwin Williams’ Black of Night, a true black shade, for the bedroom walls. The outcome, defying initial expectations, delivers a profound sense of tranquility, effectively toning down the space and promoting relaxation.
To successfully implement this design, particular attention is given to matching tones within the room. Cullen's strategy involves creating subtle contrasts against the dark walls by incorporating light gray hues that share similarly cool undertones. This color gradient is applied to key elements such as bed linens, chair upholstery, and draperies, initiating with black and gradually fading to gray. This meticulous selection ensures a cohesive and harmonious palette that enhances the calming effect of the dark walls.
Another crucial aspect of this design is the strategic placement of accent colors to "frame" the room. In a tone-on-tone environment, accents, whether pops of color or white elements, must be balanced to avoid appearing out of place. For instance, white Visual Comfort bedside lamps, while striking on their own, are integrated seamlessly when paired with cream-striped bedding and crisp white ceilings and trim. This thoughtful arrangement ensures that all accent pieces contribute to the overall design without disrupting the tranquil aesthetic.
Simplicity in styling the bed is also emphasized. The design suggests using a minimal number of decorative elements, specifically a pair of decorative shams and a small accent pillow, all from Eastern Accents’ linen collection. This approach prevents the bed from feeling cluttered and maintains the serene, uncluttered ambiance of the room.
Finally, the design incorporates a dedicated space for unwinding. A seating arrangement positioned near a large window offers an ideal spot for relaxation or conversation. The chairs feature a pinstripe fabric, further contributing to the room's shades-of-gray scheme, while a magenta ottoman and matching pillows introduce a measured splash of vibrant color. This adds visual interest without overpowering the room's fundamental sense of peace and sophistication. This article was originally published in 5280 Home October/November 2017.
