Plaster Walls Are the Secret to This Sleek Bathroom Transformation
Los Angeles-based designer Linda Hayslett of LH.Designs undertook a second bathroom renovation for existing clients, aiming to achieve a clean, fresh, and uncluttered aesthetic that harmonized with previous design work in their home. A key design element in this project was the innovative use of plaster for the bathroom walls, creating a concrete-like appearance. The decision to employ plaster stemmed from the client's aversion to grout, leading Hayslett to bypass traditional tiling methods. Hayslett highlights that plaster, typically used for building exteriors due to its waterproofing properties, can effectively be applied indoors, even within showers, a concept many people may not realize.
Another challenge addressed during the renovation was the shower's low ceiling. To mitigate this and enhance functionality, Hayslett reconfigured the plumbing from the wall to the ceiling, allowing for the installation of a rain shower head. Both the designer and the clients expressed satisfaction with the final outcome, noting that despite no changes to the bathroom's footprint, the space feels considerably larger than its original state. The 'before' state of the bathroom featured a bulky vanity that consumed a significant portion of the space and thick, visually obtrusive tiles.
The inspiration for the redesign was a modern, beach-spa ambiance, intended to integrate seamlessly with the clients' overall home design, including the previously renovated primary bathroom. The project, encompassing under 70 square feet, initially had a budget constraint of $25,000, though the final bill reached $54,000. Key elements in the transformed bathroom include an Infinity black mantel wall mirror from CB2, Dome pendants from Naaya, Radi widespread faucets and Stria robe hooks from Phylrich. The most significant splurge was the plumbing fixtures, particularly the brass elements, chosen for their sleek and modern appeal and their complementary interaction with the stucco walls, despite their higher cost compared to chrome options.
Conversely, a clever cost-saving measure was implemented for the countertops. Instead of purchasing a full slab for approximately $4,000 (including installation), the team opted for prefabricated countertops. This choice reduced the cost to roughly $1,200 for the material and an additional $1,000 for installation, effectively halving the expense while still achieving the desired aesthetic. Hayslett expressed enthusiasm for the success of the plaster wall application, indicating a desire to incorporate similar concrete-look finishes in future projects. The renovation effectively transformed a dated bathroom into a spacious and modern spa-like retreat through strategic material choices and design solutions, demonstrating that significant visual impact can be achieved without altering structural footprints.
