Bagshot Park 'brings out Sophie Wessex's understated elegance' - inside £45million mansion
Sophie, Countess of Wessex, and Prince Edward reside at Bagshot Park in Windsor, a property valued at approximately £45 million, where they raised their two children, Lady Louise Windsor and James, Viscount Severn. The interiors of this royal residence are characterized by a blend of lavish historical touches and modern additions, reflecting Sophie's understated elegance and approachable personality.
According to Deepa Mehta-Sagar, an interior designer and founder of Area Decor LLC, the living room at Bagshot Park features a cool, powder blue colour scheme, incorporating blue wallpaper, blue and gold curtains, and complementary furnishings. This palette is described as almost playful, mirroring the Countess's character. Traditional royal elements are present through ornate details like a large wooden desk and a shimmering chandelier. The reception room showcases intricately carved Indian-style wooden panels, contributing a core design element with magnificent scale, evident in the carved walls and large doors with aged brass handles. These ornate wooden details align with traditional royal aesthetics.
A significant modern addition to the property is an expansive conservatory. This space is noted for its openness, which is seen as reflective of Sophie's approachable nature, and provides extensive views of the sprawling gardens. Sophie has frequently been seen in her kitchen during interviews, which is designed with a classic navy-blue colour scheme. This area includes glass cabinets displaying fine china, such as an assortment of teapots, teacups, and saucers.
Bagshot Park, a Grade-II listed building, encompasses 51 acres of ground, offering a substantial degree of privacy for the royal couple. This privacy was particularly important for Sophie and Prince Edward, who made a deliberate decision to raise their children, Lady Louise Windsor and James, Viscount Severn, away from the public eye by not bestowing upon them HRH or Prince and Princess titles at birth. This choice reflects their desire for a private upbringing for their children, a decision that has reportedly earned admiration from other members of the royal family, including Kate Middleton.
The expert highlights that the calm and modern aesthetic of the interiors, combined with the inherent privacy of Bagshot Park, makes it highly appealing. The residence is described as regal yet warm and inviting, encapsulating a balance between its historical grandeur and contemporary comfort. This environment allowed Sophie to raise her children in a manner consistent with her values, emphasizing a degree of normalcy despite their royal status.
