Tales of bougainvillea, spring and a stunning courtyard
Nida Mian, an interior designer with a background in financial consulting, has created the contemporary and chic interiors of Café de Como, located within the Como Museum in Lahore. Mian, who launched an e-commerce company for home accessories called Cheezain etc. five years prior, describes interior design as a lifelong passion. The cafe's courtyard, a project for a close friend, Seher Tareen, was a realization of a shared vision.
The courtyard's design incorporates a blend of elements that evoke a sense of being transported to another locale while retaining nostalgic Eastern courtyard features. Key design aspects include black and white flooring, large antique-style mirrors, lanterns, fairy lights, and abundant bougainvillea. This combination allows the space to transform from a lively spring-like atmosphere during the day to a romantic setting in the evening, with both natural light and darkness enhancing its appeal.
Mian's design philosophy for the café was to create a unique "vibe" that makes visitors feel removed from Lahore, yet connected to familiar elements. Her obsession with indoor/outdoor spaces and courtyards, where the boundary between inside and outside is fluid, is evident in the execution. The design strikes a balance between fancy and minimalist aesthetics, utilizing simple furniture alongside crystal chandeliers. Mian advocates for a "high-low mix" in interior design, believing that a space limited to solely traditional or modern elements can become sterile. The crystal chandelier, for instance, was chosen to introduce softness and complement the black, minimal furniture, preventing the space from resembling a hotel.
The selection of plants for the courtyard was a quick and deliberate process, aiming for economical options that offer diversity in height, texture, and color, thus mimicking natural landscapes. Mian emphasizes the importance of designing with local context, avoiding overly curated looks. Given the museum's existing monochrome architecture, the café was designed to mirror these black and white lines. An accent color, pink from the bougainvillea installation, was added to provide warmth and an inviting feel, making the café appear as though it has evolved over time rather than being overtly modern.
Lighting was a crucial consideration, with Mian stressing the importance of validating design elements under various conditions—daylight, evening, night, and different weather scenarios. She aimed to create a romantic ambiance, achieved through dim, flickering lantern-like lights around the mirrors and fairy lights woven into the ceiling bougainvillea. This meticulous attention to detail ensured the final space aligned perfectly with her vision, garnering significant appreciation.
