Solo Stove Mesa XL review: The best tabletop fire pit
The Solo Stove Mesa and Mesa XL are tabletop fire pits designed to provide ambiance and a fun way to cook s'mores. These devices are smaller alternatives to full-sized fire pits, ideal for those with limited space or budget, or simply seeking a decorative patio accent. They operate using either wood or pellets and are not intended for heating purposes.
Both models mirror the design of larger Solo Stove fire pits, featuring a cylindrical steel body with perforations for airflow. The Mesa measures 6.8 inches tall by 5.1 inches wide and weighs 1.4 pounds, while the Mesa XL is 8.6 inches tall by 7 inches wide and weighs 2.3 pounds. Available colors include stainless steel, black, blue, red, green, and white. The Mesa includes a pellet adapter, whereas the Mesa XL has a dual-fuel grate compatible with both pellets and hardwood. The Mesa is priced at $79, and the Mesa XL at $109.
In terms of performance, both the Mesa and Mesa XL generate a significant flame, reaching 3-4 inches above the rim, which is suitable for toasting marshmallows, though users should exercise caution as marshmallows can ignite quickly. The fire pits do not emit substantial heat, so they are not effective as patio heaters. The smaller Mesa proved less practical for wood burning due to its requirement for wood pieces 3 inches or smaller, leading to frequent pellet replenishment every five minutes. This frequent refueling can be tedious and, if neglected, necessitates restarting the fire. The Mesa XL, accommodating wood chunks up to 5 inches, offers a more relaxed experience with refueling only every 15 minutes.
Both fire pits are easy to clean, largely due to their efficient fuel combustion, which leaves minimal ash. Cleaning involves simply removing the interior components and inverting the unit. While the Solo Stove Mesa and Mesa XL are effective for creating ambiance and light cooking, the Mesa XL is recommended over the smaller Mesa due to its larger fuel capacity and less frequent refueling needs, making it a more convenient option for outdoor gatherings.
