Luxury Home Tour 2015: a Nor-Son Home in Minnetrista
This article highlights the "Forever Estate," a remarkable home designed by Nor-Son for Katherine and Randy Schneewind, located on Smithtown Bay on Lake Minnetonka. The couple, married for just over a year, envisioned a timeless design that merges drama, grandeur, and comfort for their blended family. The design and construction process involved a dedicated team from Nor-Son, including senior project manager Adam Burrington, site supervisor Neil Ebbenga, and architect Peter Eskuche, alongside designers Kirsten Hollister and Sharon Seitz from Historic Studio. This team collaborated closely with the homeowners for a year to bring their vision to life.
Eskuche's architectural approach centered on maximizing the spectacular views, positioning the house and designing the great room to showcase the patio, pool, and Smithtown Bay through a 24-foot retractable wall of glass doors, complete with retractable screens. The great room, measuring 32 by 20 feet, is framed by unmatched cast-stone fireplaces installed by Randy's company, The Berg Group, imbuing the space with a European flair conducive to relaxation and dining. The kitchen features two crystal chandeliers illuminating a massive island, complemented by a mother-of-pearl tile wall and a blend of metal finishes, all contributing to a sense of functional luxury. A subtle motif of the infinity symbol, cherished by the couple, is integrated throughout the home in rugs, cabinetry, and even the pool's design.
The home includes a glass-encased, multi-functional music and office space, housing Katherine’s grand piano and a round table suitable for meetings or children's homework. The homeowners' extensive art collection, reflecting their global travels and romantic experiences, adorns both public and private areas. Unique historical elements from the original 1900 Van Dusen estate, which was on the property and destroyed by a 2010 fire, are thoughtfully incorporated into the lower level. These include a brick wall, a Tiffany garden gate, and a 600-year-old Venetian marble fountain, transforming a wide hall into a Parisian-inspired walkway. The lower level is also designed for family enjoyment and relaxation, featuring a couples’ massage room, a garage with space for six cars, and a sport court and arcade.
Upstairs, the master suite is accessed through double doors and boasts a dramatic tufted gray velvet wall serving as a headboard. Katherine’s passion for fashion is evident in her spacious dressing room. The luxurious master bath includes double sinks, a built-in vanity, a glass-enclosed shower, and a coffee bar, with a walkout balcony offering additional outdoor access. The upper level also accommodates children's bedrooms and a playroom, with an elevator providing convenient access to all floors. A significant personal touch is a picture wall outside the master suite, curated by the designers, showcasing wedding photos, Katherine’s Ironman competition, and other family and travel memories, which Katherine identifies as their most cherished artwork and the true essence of their home.
