Konga, a company specializing in prefabricated, Scandinavian-inspired cabins, has introduced its latest innovation: the Konga Float. This off-grid, solar-powered floating home reflects the company's commitment to nature immersion, eco-friendliness, and Scandinavian design aesthetics. Founded by Paulius Žemaitis and Goda Žemaitė, who drew inspiration from their nature-rich childhoods in Lithuania, Konga aims to connect people with the natural world through their designs. They collaborated with Danish architect Mette Fredskild to bring their vision to life. The Konga Float is highlighted as the company's most exciting project to date, representing over a year of development and boundary-pushing to achieve a 100-percent off-grid, all-electric floating house capable of sustained navigation using only solar energy. The maiden voyage of the Konga Float was for Claartje, who operates a private sailing school in the Netherlands. She sought a contemporary, high-quality, sustainable, and bespoke floating home for her island in a Friesland lake. Claartje and her husband now moor the Konga Float in the lake and occasionally offer it for rent. The base model of the Konga Float is priced at €177,000 before tax and delivery. This 430-square-foot unit is designed to accommodate four people and comes fully electric, equipped with an E-Propulsion motor, a 20-kilowatt battery pack, and 12 rooftop solar panels. An optional 10-kilowatt additional battery is available for €5,000, suitable for extended journeys. What distinguishes the Konga Float in the prefab market is its strong emphasis on eco-friendliness. The design incorporates upcycled materials and off-grid systems to minimize its environmental footprint. The prefabricated construction process ensures controlled manufacturing, thereby reducing construction waste. The floating home features expansive windows and an open-plan layout, providing panoramic views and a direct connection to the surrounding landscape. Konga also has plans for global expansion, with the first Konga Cabin soon to be delivered to Mendocino County, U.S. Clients can expect the production of a Konga Float to take four months after placing an initial deposit. Konga manages the quality production and delivery logistics of the houseboat. The client is responsible for obtaining any necessary permits and arranging for a mobile crane to unload the cabin upon delivery, as it does not require on-site installation. Customization options include installing additional batteries for longer trips, choosing different wood types (birch, pine, or okoume plywood) for the poplar panels and furniture, removing bunk beds from the bedroom, and selecting either Thermowood or charred wood for the exterior. The Kynttilä cabin, a 150-square-foot prefab structure designed by Helsinki-based ORTRAUM Architects, is located on the Nunnanniemi peninsula in Eastern Finland. This off-grid meditation cottage was conceived to offer a tranquil space that fosters visual and spiritual focus. The architects adopted a Zen philosophy, stripping the design to its essentials and utilizing cross-laminated timber (CLT) for most of the building, including integrated furniture and the front door. The exterior is clad in larch timber, while the interior showcases the exposed CLT, maintaining a minimalist aesthetic. The inspiration for Kynttilä is deeply rooted in its natural surroundings. Situated in an untouched forested area, the cabin offers views of the water on both sides of the peninsula. The structure's five primary elements, which form its space, share identical dimensions, contributing to the interior's serene atmosphere. The compact interior is designed to accommodate a full-size bed, with an additional bunk bed accessible via a ladder, maximizing the limited space. A significant design feature is the floor-to-ceiling glazing on one end of the cabin, which establishes a strong connection with the external environment. This extensive glazing allows for direct interaction with nature, permitting daylight, weather patterns, and seasonal changes to influence the daily rhythm within the cabin. The exposed CLT on the ceiling and walls, coupled with these large windows, frames the picturesque views of the surrounding forest and waterfront, enhancing the cabin's meditative quality. To minimize environmental impact, Kynttilä was engineered for rapid assembly, taking only a single day to construct. A temporary road was created for the installation process and subsequently removed to preserve the forest's pristine condition. Overhanging eaves provide covered areas at both ends of the cabin, with a slender bench on a raised platform at the back offering an intimate outdoor gathering spot. The cabin is utilized as both a short-term guesthouse and a meditation retreat during the summer months. From an aerial perspective, Kynttilä's close proximity to the nearby lake is evident. Architect Michael K. Chen's latest project is a 600-square-foot luxury residence named Pied-à-Mer, located on the world's largest private cruise ship. The design draws inspiration from nautical-inspired midcentury modernist influences, specifically Le Corbusier’s 1952 Unite D’Habitation, which was likened to an ocean liner. This holiday apartment is designed to be highly adaptable, transforming from a spacious one-bedroom for a couple to a two-bedroom unit suitable for visits from their adult children. The apartment maximizes space efficiency by incorporating two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen, a dressing room, a sitting area, a trunk room, an entry hall, and additional storage. The core of the design relies on a series of prefabricated, pod-like volumes that serve to organize the apartment's layout and conceal various functional elements. These hidden features include fold-up cantilevered beds and integrated appliances, contributing to the apartment's shape-shifting capability. Much of the apartment’s components were prefabricated off-site, with some elements manufactured in Austria and installed in Spain during the ship's dry-dock maintenance period. Chen collaborated with yacht builders for custom architectural elements, including ribbed cladding, pods, cabinetry, and functional items like beds. A custom bronze-and-aluminum dining table, co-designed with Rush Design, folds down from the wall, and integrated LEDs are used throughout to minimize the need for additional lighting fixtures. Echoing Le Corbusier’s concept of a "machine for living," the custom-fabricated pieces feature a cool blue and gray-toned ribbed aluminum finish, providing a distinct machine aesthetic. To introduce warmth and contrast within this aesthetic, the interior is outfitted with tactile materials such as lacquered millwork, stone surfaces, and soft fabrics like mohair, velvet, and suede. Chen emphasized the importance of rounded forms, tough yet elegant materials, translucency, reflectivity, and tactility in the design. The furnishings were carefully selected to subtly convey the seafaring context through materiality, soft forms, crisp edges, and a balance of heft and lightness. Designing within the confined 600-square-foot space presented challenges, especially given the enhanced safety requirements for a vessel in constant motion. The architects had to ensure that all transforming elements operated smoothly, effortlessly, and precisely, a task made more complex by the ship’s inherent movement. They relied heavily on contractors and fabricators to achieve extreme precision in construction and had to design with greater tolerance in mind for a moving vessel. To create a sense of spaciousness, the apartment's orientation maximizes sea views, and visual clutter is reduced through concealed LEDs and continuous aluminum ribs that hide divisions, doors, and appliances. The principal bath is adorned with hammered quartzite, white glass, and a custom marble tile floor, while the guest bath features Artistic Tile stone mosaic flooring and various field tiles.
