The how-to behind the Land of Nod’s rainbow wall

The Land of Nod, a children's decor store and sister company to Crate & Barrel, recently expanded its presence at South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa. A prominent feature of the newly designed space is a rainbow-colored brick wall located at the checkout counter, conceived and painted by Land of Nod's creative director, Danielle Kurtz. Kurtz's process began with a base coat of a very pale mint green, chosen to serve as the 'grout' color for the faux brick effect. The color palette for the individual 'bricks' was developed around a dark turquoise shade, which is a key color from the exterior of the company's remodeled flagship store in Chicago. To create a modern, alternative rainbow, Kurtz selected a combination of seven colors, including the initial mint green. She used a Sherwin Williams paint fan to choose colors that would work well together, ensuring none were too light, as the Land of Nod logo would be added in white later. Initially, Kurtz had considered eight colors, but she decided against using a deep navy, deeming it too overpowering for the overall design. During the painting process, she started with the lighter colors, applying them first to ensure adequate coverage, and then moved to the darker shades. She notes that the darker colors naturally had more visual presence, requiring fewer bricks to be painted in those tones. For the painting itself, standard interior semi-gloss Sherwin Williams paint was used. Kurtz executed the entire project freehand, without the use of masking tape, completing the wall in approximately 15 hours. While the method resulted in some imperfections and required minor touch-ups on the 'grout' lines afterward, Kurtz believes this approach aligns with the Land of Nod's brand philosophy, which embraces a less-than-perfect, more authentic aesthetic. The slight irregularities are considered part of the charm, especially since the wall is intended to be viewed from a distance and the original bricks themselves were not perfectly uniform. #HomeDecor #DIY #InteriorDesign #LandOfNod #ChildrensDecor #RetailDesign #CreativeProcess #PaintProject #HomeDecor #DIY #InteriorDesign #LandOfNod #ChildrensDecor #RetailDesign #CreativeProcess #PaintProject
