Studio Siem & Pabon's Fervent Carpet kills dust mites to relieve asthma sufferers
Studio Siem & Pabon, an Eindhoven-based design firm, has created a unique rug called the Fervent Carpet, specifically designed to address the challenges faced by asthma sufferers living with textile furnishings. The Fervent Carpet is engineered to heat up and eliminate dust mites, a common trigger for asthma and allergies, which often accumulate in carpets, upholstery, and other fabric items within the home. This innovative solution allows individuals with asthma to enjoy the comfort and aesthetic appeal of textiles without exacerbating their respiratory conditions.
The designers, Anne Pabon and Siem Lenders, conducted extensive research into the impact of textiles on indoor environments, particularly for asthmatic individuals. They observed that many asthma sufferers are forced to forgo plush home furnishings, resulting in living spaces that can feel impersonal and sterile. This insight prompted their development of a product that could reintroduce textiles into these homes in a health-conscious manner. The Fervent Carpet seeks to bridge the gap between desirable home aesthetics and the practical health needs of people with asthma.
The Fervent Carpet is designed in the shape of a tightly coiled piece of rope, incorporating a heating mechanism. Every two months, the rug can be connected to a standard radiator to heat its fibers to 60 degrees Celsius. This temperature is sufficient to effectively kill dust mites, ensuring the rug remains a clean and safe environment for sensitive individuals. The heating process is achieved through hydraulic connections located at the ends of two rubber-coated ropes that unravel from the circular mat. These ropes circulate warm water from the radiator throughout the braided piping of the rug.
To prevent water leakage when not connected to a heat source, the two rope lengths can be linked together to form a closed loop. The designers explained that using a radiator as the heat source was a logical choice, as it is an existing heating system within most homes. When the rug is disconnected, the hydraulic connections automatically seal, preventing any water spills. The Fervent Carpet is available in two distinct colors, royal blue and light green, and features a gradient effect where the color intensifies from white at the outer edge to a deeper pigment towards the center. This design not only offers a practical solution for asthma sufferers but also contributes to the aesthetic quality of the home environment.
Studio Siem & Pabon showcased the Fervent Carpet at Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven, which took place from October 18 to 26. This exhibition highlighted the carpet's innovative approach to combining home decor with health-conscious design, offering a new perspective on how everyday household items can be engineered to improve the quality of life for individuals with specific health needs. The product represents a thoughtful integration of functionality, design, and health considerations, providing a comfortable and allergy-friendly alternative for home interiors.
