Aqara Reveal Retrofit Roller Blind Motor
Aqara has introduced its latest smart home product, the Roller Shade Driver E1, which is designed to convert existing roller blinds into smart, automated window coverings. This device operates as a retrofit solution, eliminating the need to replace current roller blinds. It functions by engaging with the beaded chain of a standard roller blind, allowing the motorized cog within the E1 to pull the chain up or down. This mechanism enables smart control through voice commands, pre-set automations, or directly via the Apple Home app or Aqara Home app.
The concept of a retrofit motor for roller blinds is not entirely new, with other manufacturers offering similar products. For instance, Soma provides the Soma Smart Shades 2, which also motorizes roller blinds. However, these competing products often require a separate hub for integration with smart home ecosystems like HomeKit, Google Assistant, and Amazon Alexa. In some cases, such as with the Soma hub, this separate hub may not be HomeKit certified, potentially limiting functionality or reliability within the Apple ecosystem.
A key differentiator for Aqara's Roller Shade Driver E1 is its confirmed compatibility with Apple HomeKit and its utilization of Zigbee 3.0 technology. This combination is expected to offer a more responsive and integrated experience for HomeKit users compared to devices that rely on Bluetooth, a common protocol for similar retrofit solutions. The E1 features a built-in, non-replaceable lithium battery that can be recharged via a USB-C port. Users have the option to power the device continuously if a power supply is conveniently located nearby. The motor has a power consumption of approximately 5W when active, and its battery is estimated to last up to two months on standby with typical usage (one full up-and-down cycle per day for a 1.8-meter roller blind).
The design of the Aqara Roller Shade Driver E1 is similar to other retrofit blind motors available in the market, though these typically use Wi-Fi or Bluetooth and generally lack HomeKit compatibility. While specific pricing details for the E1 have not yet been announced, its inclusion in Aqara's 'E1 range' suggests it will be an affordable option. The economical aspect is further enhanced by the fact that users do not need to purchase new blinds, only the motor to automate their existing ones. The device supports various types of roller blinds, and its integration within the Aqara app provides comprehensive controls and settings, including blind type selection and additional configurations.
