15 Household Things You Can Clean with Borax

Borax, a powdery substance composed of boron, sodium, and oxygen, also known as sodium borate, sodium tetraborate, or disodium tetraborate, has been a staple in household cleaning for centuries, dating back to ancient Egypt. While commonly recognized as a laundry booster, its utility extends to various cleaning tasks around the home. It is crucial to distinguish borax from boric acid, which is primarily used in pesticides, and from baking soda (sodium bicarbonate), as borax has a higher pH level and is more abrasive. Safety is paramount when using borax. Ingestion can be lethal, so it must be kept out of reach of children and pets and avoided near the mouth, nose, eyes, or skin. When cleaning, it is advisable to wear gloves and ensure adequate ventilation. A critical safety warning is never to mix borax with bleach, as this combination can produce toxic fumes. Adhering to these precautions allows borax to be an effective and economical alternative to commercial chemical cleaners. Borax offers numerous applications for deep cleaning and maintaining a spotless home. In laundry, it serves as a powerful agent for whitening, brightening, and deodorizing clothes, effectively removing stubborn stains and odors while preventing fading. It also softens water, which contributes to softer fabrics. However, it should not be used on delicate materials like wool or silk due to its abrasive nature. For carpets and rugs, borax can remove stains when applied as a powder to a pre-blotted area, and it can deodorize when combined with baking soda, left for approximately 30 minutes, and then vacuumed. Caution is advised to keep children and pets away from treated areas. Regarding floors, borax is suitable for cleaning tile and vinyl, with two tablespoons mixed into a gallon of water providing an effective mopping and disinfecting solution. It is not recommended for hardwood floors or wooden furniture, as it can cause damage. For countertops, borax acts as an excellent all-purpose cleaner, though it should be avoided on natural stone surfaces like marble, granite, and quartz, which can lose their shine. A mixture of half a cup of borax with a gallon of water in a spray bottle works well for general cleaning. For tough stains, a paste made from one cup of borax and a quarter cup of lemon juice can be applied. Borax can also refresh the refrigerator, using the lemon juice paste for sticky spills or the all-purpose spray for lingering odors. For dishwashers and washing machines, borax simplifies cleaning. For washing machines, pouring borax and vinegar into an empty drum and running a cycle eliminates stale smells. For dishwashers, adding a quarter cup of borax to the bottom alongside regular detergent helps clean both the machine and dishes. Sinks can be sanitized with borax due to its disinfectant properties; a paste with lemon juice lifts stains, and three tablespoons left in a drain for 15 minutes before rinsing can clean and deodorize. Pots and pans benefit from borax to dissolve grease and food particles, but it should not be used on aluminum cookware. Windows, mirrors, and glass shower doors can achieve a streak-free shine with a thick paste of borax and water applied with a sponge. In bathrooms, borax effectively tackles mold and mildew on showers, tubs, tile, and grout, with a spray solution left for 20 minutes before scrubbing. For soap scum and hard water spots, a thick paste can be left on affected areas. Borax is also effective for cleaning and deodorizing toilet bowls, freshening trash cans, removing rust from various surfaces with a paste, and renewing outdoor furniture and cushions when mixed with dish soap and water. #BoraxCleaning #HouseholdCleaning #DIYCleaners #LaundryTips #HomeMaintenance #StainRemoval #Disinfectant #EcoFriendlyCleaning #CleaningHacks #BoraxCleaning #HouseholdCleaning #DIYCleaners #LaundryTips #HomeMaintenance #StainRemoval #Disinfectant #EcoFriendlyCleaning #CleaningHacks
