Philadelphia Home: Photos of Philly’s Best Kitchens

This article presents a curated look into five distinct kitchen designs in Philadelphia, offering inspiration and practical tips for various tastes, ranging from modern to traditional aesthetics. Each kitchen showcases unique design philosophies and innovative solutions tailored to the homeowners' preferences and the architectural context of their residences. The first featured kitchen, dubbed “The Sophisticate,” belongs to Bennett and Judie Weinstock in Rittenhouse. Designed by Joanne Hudson, it embodies old-world charm with industrial touches and European craftsmanship. Bennett Weinstock, an interior designer and avid collector, has his extensive collections of dairyware, antique scales, and china artfully displayed in custom cabinets and shelves. The kitchen features pinewood floors, white subway tiles for the backsplash, and marble countertops, aiming for an aged, European butcher shop aesthetic. Industrial elements are introduced through La Cornue metal cabinetry, a matching range, and a hood. Authentic 1920s Holophane pendant lights illuminate a handmade reproduction of an antique silver sink from Germany, while decorative stained glass cleverly conceals an unappealing outside view. Next is “The Bold” kitchen in Mount Airy, a vibrant transformation from a formerly dark neocolonial home. With the expertise of architect Alan Metcalfe and interior designer Val Nehez, homeowners Michael and Amy Cohen infused their 1920s house with a Memphis-modern style. The kitchen is characterized by bright white walls contrasted with splashes of primary colors. A herringbone slate floor with radiant heating grounds the space, complemented by warm figured maple countertops, chosen for their forgiving nature and ability to develop a rich patina. A highlight of this kitchen is a commissioned art installation by Drexel professor Paul Schultz, featuring plastic bread tags suspended between acrylic panes, serving as a colorful divider between the kitchen and dining areas. “The Modern” kitchen in Wyndmoor addresses the challenge of a narrow, shoebox-shaped space and a tight six-week deadline. Interior designer Rebecca Paul successfully blended high-end appliances, custom-designed elements, and off-the-shelf solutions. Top-of-the-line appliances and fixtures, such as a Dorenbacht faucet, are integrated alongside a custom stainless-steel trough sink that doubles as an ice bucket and a unique boxy stainless hood designed by Paul herself. Milk-glass-fronted cabinets from IKEA provide ample storage, housing amenities like a built-in Miele coffeemaker and a flat-screen TV. A chunky Galaxy-glass-topped island offers additional counter space and seating, proving that creative thinking can overcome spatial and temporal constraints. “The Boho” kitchen in Queen Village reflects a love for rustic, reclaimed materials. When Caryn Furtaw acquired her trinity home, the kitchen was small, enclosed, and lacked character. Designer Niko Dyshniku from Greensaw Design opened up the space by removing a wall and transformed it using wonderfully old materials. Discoveries during the renovation included a hidden brick wall. The floor was replaced with reclaimed wide-plank chestnut from Philly churches, and the cabinetry was crafted from reclaimed Belgian blue glass and wood sourced from a Pottstown barn. Despite its petite 12-by-seven-foot dimension, the kitchen is fully equipped with modern amenities like an 18-inch Bosche dishwasher, a Bertazzoni range, and a Liebherr refrigerator, seamlessly blending new functionality with antique charm. Finally, “The Traditional” kitchen in condo king Allan Domb’s Rittenhouse residence showcases a unique concept of dual kitchens. Inspired by a cooking school at the Ritz-Carlton in Paris, designer Joanne Hudson divided the sprawling space into two fully functional areas. “Kitchen A” features a matte black La Cornue stove and hood, while “Kitchen B,” a secondary, fully equipped space, includes an oversized cleanup sink, dishwasher, oven, refrigerator, and extensive storage. This separation allows heavy-duty prep work and cleaning to be kept out of sight, ensuring that guests can enjoy conversations in a pristine main kitchen area, highlighting both aesthetic appeal and practical functionality for entertaining. #KitchenDesign #HomeRenovation #InteriorDesign #PhiladelphiaHomes #KitchenInspiration #LuxuryKitchens #ModernKitchen #TraditionalKitchen #EclecticDesign #KitchenDesign #HomeRenovation #InteriorDesign #PhiladelphiaHomes #KitchenInspiration #LuxuryKitchens #ModernKitchen #TraditionalKitchen #EclecticDesign
