Bold splashbacks and open shelving will dominate kitchens in 2025
As 2025 approaches, kitchen design trends are moving towards a blend of enhanced functionality and distinctive personal style. Paul Richardson, a kitchen stylist at Wren Kitchens, has identified several key trends that are expected to shape kitchen aesthetics and utility in the coming year. These trends emphasize creating spaces that are both efficient and visually engaging, moving beyond purely utilitarian designs.
One significant trend is the growing prominence of pantries. Throughout 2024, pantries have gained popularity, and this ascent is set to continue into 2025. Homeowners are increasingly viewing their kitchens as spaces to showcase not only culinary activities but also carefully selected produce and high-end appliances, transforming them into aesthetic luxuries. Pantries offer practical benefits by providing walk-in storage for a variety of kitchen items, including food, cookware, and crockery. This helps in maintaining a clutter-free kitchen environment, thereby freeing up space for cooking, dining, socializing, and relaxation. However, the integration of a pantry requires substantial long-term planning and often involves architectural modifications, distinguishing it from a larder which can be incorporated into existing cupboard spaces without structural changes. For those with budget constraints or less space, larders offer a practical and cost-effective alternative for similar organizational benefits.
Open shelving is another trend gaining traction, driven by a desire to display curated items and add visual interest to the kitchen. When incorporating open shelving, careful consideration of the kitchen layout is crucial. For instance, vertical or tall tower shelves are recommended for compact kitchens to maximize storage efficiency, while mid-level shelves are suitable for narrower areas. The styling of open shelves should balance practicality with aesthetics. It is advisable to keep frequently used items easily accessible and to adopt a minimalist approach for modern kitchen designs. Thematic displays, such as matching jars or coordinated crockery collections, can contribute to a refined and cohesive appearance.
Statement backsplashes are evolving from being a mere functional element to a focal point in kitchen design. Paul Richardson anticipates that in 2025, homeowners will become more adventurous with their backsplash choices, using them to introduce subtle colors, textures, and personality into the kitchen. Backsplashes are no longer considered an afterthought but rather an effective way to invigorate a space and subtly deviate from conventional, neutral kitchen palettes. Design options include plain tiles in grid patterns, such as white bevelled-edge tiles with dark grout or black tiles with white grout, which offer a classic and attractive look. Mirrored tiles provide durability and hygiene while also enhancing brightness and the perception of space through light reflection, particularly effective when placed near underlit cabinets. For a more dynamic and distinctive design, patterns like herringbone or chevron, created by laying rectangular tiles diagonally, can add energy and a unique visual flair.
The enduring popularity of the shaker style in kitchen design is expected to continue, albeit with modern refinements. Richardson notes that the shaker style will remain a staple, evolving to feature more sophisticated, slimmer profiles. Future variations of the shaker kitchen are anticipated to include handleless cabinetry, which offers a clean and minimalist aesthetic while retaining the classic door style. Furthermore, there will be an increased integration of color to personalize and contemporize shaker kitchens, moving beyond traditional wooden tones.
Finally, a significant shift in color palettes is foreseen, with a move away from light grey and beige towards more earthy hues. These earthy tones will be integrated into various kitchen elements, including cabinetry, backsplashes, and seating. The expanding range of earth tone options provides numerous choices, such as Olive Green, Moss Green, Forest Green, Buckingham Green in the green spectrum, and Smoke Blue, Navy Blue, Sapphire Blue, Pencil Grey, and Nero in the blue spectrum. Beyond their visual appeal, these subtle colors offer versatility, complementing various worktop materials like light or dark natural woods, black granite, or white marble, and harmonizing with textured finishes found in minimalist designs such as Japandi. This trend reflects a broader move towards natural, calming, and adaptable color schemes in contemporary kitchen environments.
