This Organization Solution Is on the Way Out (And It’s Not Open Shelving)
Once a beloved kitchen organization solution, especially popularized by culinary icon Julia Child, pegboard walls are experiencing a decline in popularity. This method, which involves hanging various cooking tools like copper pots, rolling pins, and strainers for easy access and display, was once considered brilliant for creating a space that showcased one's belongings. Beverly Nguyen, owner of Beverly’s, a home goods shop known for its aesthetically pleasing kitchen items, acknowledges the practicality of pegboards in making cooking tools readily available.
However, recent trends indicate a shift away from this exposed organizational style. A poll conducted among Domino Instagram followers revealed that 71 percent of respondents are ready to abandon the pegboard display. This suggests a growing preference among homeowners to minimize the visual clutter of everyday kitchen tools, possibly due to the increased time spent at home over the past two years, leading to a desire for a cleaner aesthetic.
For those looking to transition away from pegboards, several alternative storage solutions offer both functionality and a less exposed appearance. One highly effective option is incorporating pull-out cabinets, particularly those designed for pots and pans. Systems like those from Rev-a-Shelf bring bulky cookware to the forefront with a simple pull, keeping them out of sight when not in use while ensuring easy access.
Another practical solution involves utilizing the inside of cabinet doors for hanging tools. Command hooks or similar adhesive organizers can transform the inner surfaces of cabinet doors into discreet storage for items such as oven mitts, trivets, and two-sided cheese graters. This renter-friendly method helps to declutter countertops and drawers while maintaining accessibility.
Finally, re-evaluating and optimizing drawer organization can significantly enhance kitchen tidiness. Instead of a traditional 'junk drawer,' replacing it with a well-organized ensemble of compartments can neatly store smaller utensils and tools. While custom designs, such as those by Form Kitchens, offer tailored solutions, similar effects can be achieved by combining readily available items like knife slots and vertical expandable drawer dividers. These alternatives provide efficient and aesthetically pleasing ways to organize kitchen essentials without the visual prominence of a pegboard.
